According to the plan to arrange commune-level administrative units of the city to collect people's opinions and organize People's Council meetings at all levels in the city, Hoan Kiem district established 2 grassroots administrative units, including Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam.
Specifically, Hoan Kiem District has a natural area of 1.93 km2 ; population of 71,280 people. The administrative boundary includes the entire area and population of the wards: Hang Ma, Hang Bo, Hang Dao, Hang Bac, Hang Buom, Hang Gai, Ly Thai To; most of the natural area and population of the wards: Dong Xuan, Trang Tien, Cua Dong, Hang Bong, Hang Trong; part of the natural area and population of Cua Nam ward and Dien Bien ward (Ba Dinh district).
Cua Nam administrative unit has a natural area of 1.65 km²; population of 65,667 people. The administrative boundary includes the entire area and population of the wards: Tran Hung Dao, Hang Bai, Phan Chu Trinh; most of the natural area and population of Cua Nam ward; part of the natural area and population of the wards: Hang Bong, Hang Trong, Trang Tien; Pham Dinh Ho, Nguyen Du wards (Hai Ba Trung district).
The entire natural area and population of Chuong Duong and Phuc Tan wards are currently under Hong Ha administrative unit.
The names of Hoan Kiem and Cua Nam wards have profound meanings, closely linked to the historical development process and cultural significance of the capital Hanoi .
According to the Standing Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem District, Nguyen Quoc Hoan, the results of the public opinion survey showed that the rate of voters participating in the vote was high and expressed support for the city's policy of arranging ward-level administrative units.
The people of the wards in the old quarter are excited, united, and highly in agreement with the new name of the ward, “Hoan Kiem Ward”. The name fully encompasses the meaning, preserves the cultural traditions, and continues the long history of the historic inner city area of Hoan Kiem.
People in the old quarter area (Phan Chu Trinh, Hang Bai, Cua Nam wards) unanimously supported the new name Cua Nam ward (Cua Nam ward: 98.24%, Hang Bai ward: 97.5%, Phan Chu Trinh ward: 97.12% of voters agreed).
