Net immigration to Germany fell sharply, by nearly 50%.

A decrease in net immigration could impact the German labor market, given that the country's economy is facing an aging population, a shortage of skilled labor, and a need to attract talent from abroad.

According to the VNA correspondent in Berlin, net immigration to Germany is expected to fall sharply in 2025, reflecting a trend of significantly fewer people moving to Germany, while an increasing number of German citizens are leaving to live abroad.

According to figures released by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on June 1st, net immigration to Germany in 2025 will reach 235,000 people, a 45% decrease compared to the 430,000 people in 2024.

Throughout 2025, Germany is expected to record approximately 1.48 million immigrations and 1.25 million emigrations across its borders. Compared to 2024, immigration decreased by 13%, while emigration decreased by nearly 2%.

A key reason for the decline in net immigration is the lower number of people arriving from the main countries of origin of asylum seekers and from Ukraine. Specifically, the number from Syria decreased by 67%, to 25,000, while those from Türkiye and Afghanistan both saw a 41% decrease. Net immigration from Ukraine continued to decline, to 96,000, 21% lower than the previous year.

The migration balance between Germany and EU countries also continues to be negative. In 2025, more people are expected to leave Germany for EU countries than to move from the EU to Germany, resulting in a deficit of 54,000, compared to 34,000 the previous year. Germany recorded its largest migration deficits with Poland, at 17,000, and Bulgaria, at 14,000.

Notably, the number of German citizens leaving the country also continues to rise. Net emigration of German citizens reached 97,000, higher than the 81,000 recorded in 2024.

The main destinations for German citizens are Switzerland, Austria, and Spain. This trend shows that Germany is not only experiencing a decrease in international immigration, but is also facing the challenge of a segment of its citizens choosing to move abroad.

Within Germany, migration flows between states also show a clear differentiation. Brandenburg recorded the highest increase in population due to migration, followed by Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein. Conversely, Berlin, Thuringia, and North Rhine-Westphalia saw the highest number of people leaving.

This development shows that Germany's migration landscape is changing after a period of significant upheaval caused by conflict, refugees, and labor demand.

A decrease in net immigration could impact the German labor market in the medium term, especially as the country's economy continues to face an aging population, a shortage of skilled labor, and a need to attract talent from abroad.
