According to the General Department of Customs, in January 2024, the whole country imported 5.077 million tons of coal, with a total value of 670 million USD, an increase of 216.8% in volume and 150.2% in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Notably, the surge in coal imports was mainly driven by Australia and Indonesia.
In January, Australia was Vietnam's largest coal supplier, importing 1.91 million tons worth $288.2 million, representing a 98.5% increase in volume and nearly a 64% increase in value compared to the same period in 2023.
Meanwhile, coal imports from Indonesia reached 1.65 million tons, worth nearly $144 million, an increase of almost 232% in volume and 167% in value compared to the same period last year.
The General Department of Customs noted that, within the fuel group (including coal, crude oil, various types of gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas), except for gasoline which decreased in both quantity and value, the remaining three groups all experienced high growth compared to the same period last year, especially coal.
Overall, fuel imports in January 2024 reached 7.51 million tons with a total value of US$2.28 billion, an increase of 7.1% in volume and 6.1% in value compared to the previous month (December 2023), and a significant increase of 90% in volume and 11.7% in value compared to the same period last year.
