GĐXH – After self-medicating with over-the-counter creams to treat itching, the patient was hospitalized due to severe itching, rashes, and red patches all over the body. There, doctors diagnosed the patient with a systemic fungal skin infection.

Fungal infection and generalized scaling skin after applying medication purchased online.

Recently, information from the Central Dermatology Hospital indicated that doctors at the hospital received a patient with a systemic fungal infection caused by self-medicating with over-the-counter creams to treat itching.

Accordingly, a 17-year-old male patient from Quang Ninh province, with a history of good health, was admitted to the hospital due to the appearance of red patches and plaques all over his body accompanied by severe itching. It was reported that for about two years, the patient had experienced circular, itchy red patches and plaques on both hands.

The patient had visited the district hospital multiple times, receiving treatment with topical creams and oral antifungal medication. The lesions improved but recurred in episodes. For the past year, the patient has been self-treating with an unknown type of topical cream along with medication purchased online (unlabeled, with unknown ingredients), causing the lesions to spread throughout the body.

According to Dr. Quách Thị Hà Giang, Specialist II - Department of Male Skin Disease Treatment, Central Dermatology Hospital, through clinical examination, doctors observed that the patient had red patches and plaques in circular or polyarc shapes on the trunk, arms, and legs, with scaling, a tendency to heal in the center and spread outwards; there were also red papules and pustules in the chest and back areas. The patient experienced intense itching in the affected areas.

The patient was ordered to undergo several tests, including microscopic examination for fungal hyphae, which revealed segmented hyphae on a keratinocyte background; a complete blood count was normal; and blood biochemistry showed liver and kidney function within normal limits.

The patient was diagnosed with systemic fungal skin infection and was prescribed treatment with Itraconazole 200mg/day and topical antifungal medication.

After only 5 days of treatment, the skin lesions improved, and the patient was discharged to continue treatment at home as prescribed, along with guidance on appropriate lifestyle and hygiene to prevent recurrence.

The case of this patient serves as another warning about the habit of using medication indiscriminately, without a doctor's prescription or the guidance of a qualified professional. Previously, the Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital also received many psoriasis patients with severe complications due to the use of topical and oral medications purchased online.

Notably, an 18-year-old male patient presented with generalized redness and scaling of the skin. The patient reported having psoriasis for about a year. More than a month before admission, he saw an advertisement on social media for an oral medication and cream that claimed to completely cure psoriasis, and purchased three treatment courses for 600,000 VND.

After completing the first course of treatment, the psoriasis improved significantly, but after stopping the medication for 5 days, the redness and scaling of the skin increased and spread throughout the body, accompanied by itching, tightness, pain, fatigue, fever, and chills, forcing the patient to seek medical attention.

Be cautious about the habit of self-medicating by buying drugs online to treat illnesses.

According to doctors, many people still have the habit of self-treating skin conditions. This poses many potential health risks. Some simple illnesses can become very serious due to incorrect treatment with medications of unknown ingredients and origin that are widely sold online.

It's not just skin diseases; many people with chronic illnesses like diabetes and joint problems also frequently seek out remedies advertised online to buy and take on their own. Meanwhile, doctors have repeatedly warned about the complications patients often experience from using medications purchased online from unknown sources.

In fact, many chronic diseases such as diabetes and gout have been confirmed by medical literature as incurable; they can only be monitored, their progression limited, and complications reduced. However, in their desire for quick recovery, many patients have sought out medications of unknown origin, leading to worsening conditions.

Therefore, experts advise that when experiencing health problems, people should go to medical facilities for examination and treatment as prescribed by doctors. They should not self-treat at home or believe in drug advertisements online to avoid wasting money and worsening their condition.
