In Japan, early-season auctions for premium fruits often attract significant attention. Recently, at an early-season auction at the Sapporo Central Market in Hokkaido, a pair of Yubari melons sold for a record price of 5.8 million Yen (over 958 million VND).
This is seen as a positive sign for this year's harvest of this fruit, which is considered a symbolic agricultural product of Japan.
Following the auction, the pair of special melons will be displayed at the Sakuragaoka supermarket, part of the Keio Store chain, in Tama City, west of Tokyo.
The pair of melons were purchased by Futami Seika, a fruit and vegetable wholesaler based in Kushiro. Hirokazu Okubo, a representative of Futami Seika, said this year's crop was of very high quality thanks to favorable weather conditions, according to the Seoul Economic Daily .
"We've had the best harvest ever. We hope people all over Japan will get to enjoy the delicious taste of Yubari melons," he said.
According to the organizers, a total of 912 melons were auctioned on the first day of the season. Yubari melons are a renowned specialty of Yubari City in Hokkaido Prefecture. They are famous for their refreshing sweetness, soft flesh, and distinctive aroma.
According to the local agricultural cooperative, the low snowfall in winter and stable spring weather have helped crops grow well, resulting in more consistent fruit quality than in previous years.
For this year's harvest, the cooperative aims to ship approximately 3,086 tons of Yubari melons, with expected revenue of around 2.1 billion Yen (347 billion VND).
More than just a premium agricultural product, Yubari melons hold special significance for the city of Yubari. The city once thrived on coal mining but later fell into a severe debt crisis. The city plans to pay off all its debts by the end of the current fiscal year.
