Japan ends Apple and Google's app store monopoly

According to Kyodo news agency, on June 16, the Japanese government announced plans to implement a new law, adjusting regulations for smartphone application stores to facilitate other developers to access the market more easily as well as increase competitiveness in the context of Apple and Google still monopolizing this field.

Japanese officials say the new law will force the biggest smartphone operating system providers including Apple and Google to allow third-party app stores to run on their operating systems if they are determined to be safe.

Additionally, the new law will not allow regulators to force app developers to use their payment gateways and could impose penalties for violations.

In response to the plan, Apple's Japan office objected to several of the proposals, saying the rule would "risk" the company's ability to support app developers and protect user privacy and security. Apple said it would discuss further with the government.

Similarly, Google's Japan office said it would "promote constructive discussions with industry and government stakeholders."

The move to tighten regulations comes after Google urged the government to take a cautious stance to ensure consumer interests and not discourage innovation from app developers.

Google's Android and Apple's iOS currently dominate the operating system market.

As a result, customers will be forced to use the respective Google Play and App Store stores, while app developers will also have to comply with the policies and regulations set forth by the two tech giants.

Japanese officials say this results in high fees for app developers to pay Google and Apple without sufficient transparency in the app screening process, while also hampering innovation in mobile apps and limiting consumer choice.

However, opening up new app stores also raises security concerns, as they pose risks to personal data security and could facilitate the spread of malicious apps.
