On November 20, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said Japan was “directly approaching” Houthi militants in Yemen. These militants seized a ship owned by an Israeli businessman and operated by a Japanese company with 25 crew members (of various nationalities).

According to Mr. Yoko Kamikawa, besides contacting Israel and directly approaching the Houthis, Tokyo also urged Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran and other relevant countries to strongly urge the Houthis to release the ship and crew as soon as possible.

Earlier, on November 19, the Houthi forces in Yemen announced that they had seized an Israeli cargo ship in the Red Sea. In a statement on the Houthi's al-Masirah TV channel, the force said it had carried out a series of military operations in the Red Sea, including the seizure of an Israeli ship. The Houthis also affirmed that they would continue to target ships owned, operated or flying the Israeli flag by Israeli companies.
