Global media measurement and analytics firm Comscore estimates ticket sales for the top 10 films from May 23 to 26 totaled $326.7 million in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing the previous record of $314.3 million for the holiday weekend, set in 2013 when Fast & Furious 6 debuted.

The earnings of Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible 8 are a positive sign for the movie business, which is still below pre-pandemic levels in annual ticket sales. Hollywood workers' strikes in 2023 and competition from streaming services have hurt movie revenue.

Many box office analysts said a string of blockbusters helped boost box office revenue over the past two months, raising interest in two films released over the weekend.

"That success has translated into significant momentum," said Shawn Robbins, director of film analytics at ticketing company Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory. "Two major studios released two very different films for two very different audiences, proving once again that moviegoing remains a vital part of popular culture."

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, said some of the previous big hits were still playing in theaters, contributing to the weekend's revenue.

A Minecraft movie based on the popular video game has brought its global total to $940.6 million since its release in early April. The Michael B. Jordan horror film Sinners has increased its total to $339 million. Both are distributed by Warner Bros.

Comscore confirmed that ticket sales to date in the US and Canada totaled $3.1 billion, 22% higher than the same period in 2023, but 28% lower than the pre-pandemic year of 2019. The blockbuster Avengers: Endgame achieved the second highest revenue of all time with $2.8 billion, exploding the charts in late April 2019 when it opened.

'Mission: Impossible 8' and 'Lilo & Stitch'   also achieved high sales abroad.

Lilo & Stitch (produced by Disney) earned an additional $158.7 million in international markets, bringing its global total to $314.7 million.

Mission: Impossible 8 was distributed by Paramount Global, grossing $205.5 million worldwide , of which $127 million came from outside the United States and Canada.

Theater owners hope the public's enthusiasm for going to the cinema will continue throughout the summer - Hollywood's biggest season for moviegoing. Upcoming releases include Superman , a live-action remake of the animated film How to Train Your Dragon and F1 , which stars Brad Pitt as a Formula 1 driver.

In Vietnam, Lilo & Stitch is currently ranked 2nd in box office revenue last weekend with 5.5 billion VND, behind Doraemon: Nobita and the Adventure into the Picture World with 59 billion VND. These two animated films both surpassed the revenue last weekend of Detective Kien: The Headless Case and Flip Side 8: The Sun's Arms .

Mission: Impossible - Karma finally hits theaters in Vietnam from May 30.
