Lao Cai province has a relatively large forested area of over 825,111 hectares, including 391,144 hectares in the former Lao Cai province and 433,967 hectares in the former Yen Bai province. Over the past period, the Provincial Forest Protection Department has proactively developed forest management and protection plans tailored to the specific local conditions, emphasizing the core role of local forest rangers working alongside the people in preserving and developing forestry.
To effectively manage and protect forests, immediately after the merger of Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces and the reorganization of administrative units according to the two-tiered local government model, Lao Cai province established regional forest ranger units and local forest ranger stations to ensure that forest management, protection, and development are maintained effectively and continuously.
To date, the province has 32 forest ranger stations under the jurisdiction of various forest ranger districts. These stations are located in key areas with abundant forests, tasked with advising and coordinating with local authorities on forest protection and development. Local forest rangers have been closely monitoring the situation in the communes to manage and protect forests, encourage people to plant trees, and regularly patrol and cooperate with local authorities to detect and address violations in forest management, protection, and development.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Ha, Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department, stated: To ensure continuous forest protection after the merger, the Department has advised assigning the management area of forest and forestry land to the Hoang Lien Forest Protection Unit; developing a list of proposed projects in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2026-2030 for submission to competent authorities for consideration and consolidation. It has reviewed legal documents on forestry issued by the People's Councils and People's Committees of the former Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces before the merger, and advised on proposed handling methods. It has coordinated with relevant units and localities to conduct field inspections and determine the current state of forests for investment projects in the province. It has urged units to effectively update and monitor forest changes according to regulations; compiled and updated the forest area of the merged communes according to the new administrative boundaries, and advised and reported to the commune-level People's Committees to organize forest management according to regulations…
Forest fire prevention and control have received special attention. The Sub-Department has strengthened its direction and supervision of localities and units in implementing forest fire prevention and control laws and regulations in the area; closely monitoring the developments of hot weather conditions, promptly verifying forest fire hotspots, and organizing firefighting forces when forest fires occur.
According to statistics from the Provincial Forest Protection Department, in September, the provincial forest protection force conducted 256 awareness campaigns with 16,346 participants; carried out 112 mobile awareness campaigns; and conducted 203 fire prevention and control inspections at the grassroots level. Cumulatively, by the end of September, the province had conducted 1,370 awareness campaigns in villages and hamlets with 87,602 participants, 641 mobile awareness campaigns, and 519 fire prevention and control inspections at the grassroots level.
At the same time, direct subordinate units to strengthen forest management and protection, forest fire prevention and control; maintain and repair equipment and facilities for forest fire prevention and control, and be ready to mobilize and participate in firefighting when forest fires occur.

Nguyen Viet Ha, Head of the Provincial Forest Protection Department, added: In the coming time, the Provincial Forest Protection Department will continue to advise, direct, and supervise the effective implementation of forest management and protection, forest fire prevention and control, nature conservation, forest land use conversion, and payment for reforestation. It will coordinate with relevant departments and units to provide input, compare, and review the forest and forestry land areas of projects related to forest and forestry land use conversion. It will also coordinate with relevant agencies to complete the system of maps and forest survey data according to the new administrative boundaries of the merged communes and wards, submitting them to competent authorities for confirmation and approval; and continue to complete the procedures for preparing investment in the project to upgrade the Bat Xat Nature Reserve into a National Park.
