(NLĐO) - Recently, people in many provinces and cities have reported to the police about falling victim to online "gem-gambling" scams and being defrauded of large sums of money.

On March 22, the police in Thai Binh province announced that a sophisticated scam has recently emerged, preying on people's greed through online "breaking and opening up" of precious stones.

Many people fall into traps when participating in online jelly-poking games.

"Gem cutting" refers to the process of separating and processing rough stones surrounded by sandstone (a layer of minerals adhering to the outside of the gemstone) to obtain finished gemstone crystals.

This game is currently trending on social media, especially on Facebook and TikTok. Many people are willing to spend tens of millions of VND to "bet" on stones, believing that when they open them, they will find valuable gemstones that will bring high profits, similar to the "blind pick" method.

The perpetrators' tactic is to create groups and social media accounts on Facebook and TikTok to promote ordinary lumps of earth and rocks that are supposedly containing precious stones. They create a false scenario where the buyer finds a valuable gemstone and will be able to purchase it at an attractive price, playing on the greed of viewers.

If someone wants to participate in the "stone smashing" gambling game, the perpetrators require participants to transfer money to an account designated by the perpetrators, ranging from a few million to tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions of dong.

Upon receiving the money, the perpetrators would break open the "gemstones" that the people had purchased, but it turned out that the stones were all worthless. As a result, the players lost all the money they had transferred to the perpetrators.

The Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Thai Binh Provincial Police warns the public about the online "stone gambling" scheme, which shows signs of fraud and property theft. People should absolutely not trust or transfer money to these individuals.

At the same time, the police agency requests that when encountering such cases, people should notify the nearest police station for guidance and handling.
