The C00 combination (Literature, History, Geography) has long been one of the traditional and popular combinations in university admissions, especially in schools of social sciences and humanities, journalism, law... However, in the 2025 admissions season, a series of universities have made major changes related to the admission combination.
Most recently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi announced the regular university enrollment in 2025, accordingly, there are up to 17 majors that will no longer be recruited using the traditional C00 block combination, including: Journalism; Social work; Oriental studies; Korean studies; Management science; Public relations; Information management; Tourism and travel services management; Hotel management; Office management; International studies; Psychology; Information - Library; Cultural studies; Vietnamese studies; Sociology; Cinema and popular arts.
Meanwhile, last year, this school considered the C00 combination for 26/28 majors (except Southeast Asian Studies and Japanese Studies); this year, only 9/28 majors are considered for admission using the C00 combination.
Previously, the University of Law - Hanoi National University also announced that it would no longer consider the C00 combination from the 2025 admission season, replacing it with mandatory combinations of Math or English. Specifically, with the admission method using high school graduation exam scores, the school will only use 6 combinations including C03 (Math, Literature, History), A07 (Math, History, Geography), A01 (Math, Physics, English), D01 (Math, Literature, English), D14 (Literature, History, English), D15 (Literature, Geography, English).
The Academy of Journalism and Communication also announced a major change when in the 2025 admission season, the school will not consider the C00 combination in two popular methods: considering academic records and considering high school graduation exam scores.
Although the Academy still considers the C00 combination in the admission method combined with international certificates, it can be seen that the rate of using this traditional combination has also decreased sharply.
This year, Hanoi University of Procuracy also removed the C00 block combination in university admissions.
The fact that schools have drastically reduced the number of majors using the C block combination or even completely eliminated it has surprised and even confused many students, especially when this information was announced just 3 weeks before the 2025 high school graduation exam.
MH (a 12th grader from Nghe An) shared: “Reducing or even eliminating the admission criteria based on group C for some traditional majors is a big change for me, affecting many students. Meanwhile, the fact that schools make changes too close to the time of the high school graduation exam and university admission puts us, 12th graders, in a very passive position. Now I have lost the opportunity to apply for my favorite majors and have no choice but to quickly adjust my review plan and even my choice of major.”
TN (a student from Hanoi) said: “This sudden change has caused me a lot of difficulties and confusion, because it affects both my review process and my admission orientation. I chose the combination of Literature, History, and Geography from the beginning to pursue social sciences, now I have to study another subject to change the combination.”
Speaking with VietNamNet, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong, Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said that 2025 is the first year of the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 General Education Program.
According to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, candidates taking the high school graduation exam will take compulsory exams in two subjects: Literature, Math and two elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 (including: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology).
With the new high school exam format from 2025, in theory, it is possible to encode 36 graduation exam combinations (2+2), and 81 university entrance exam combinations based on the combination of compulsory and optional subjects of candidates.
“Based on the orientation of innovation in high school exam subjects applied from 2025, according to the admission requirements of each industry, the requirements on foreign language output standards according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, at the same time, implementing the strategy of internationalizing training programs, the school increases the selection of combinations of Literature-History-English, Literature-Geography-English, Math-Literature-English, Literature-Civic Education-English,…”, Ms. Huong explained.
However, according to Ms. Huong, full-time students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities still have the opportunity to study a second major from the school's training majors (for example: Journalism, Tourism and Travel Services Management, Public Relations, Psychology, International Studies, Hotel Management, Office Management, Information Management, Cultural Studies, etc.), or from many other training majors in schools under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
According to the explanation of the University of Law - Hanoi National University, the selection of admission combinations is considered and weighed to create opportunities for candidates in different regions, as well as create conditions for candidates to choose graduation exam subjects and subjects to register for university admission.
