Following the strategic direction of the Hanoi People's Committee and the specific plans of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports and the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, art units have simultaneously come to schools, transforming educational spaces into vibrant performance venues, breathing new life into Literature and traditional arts subjects.
From the pages of a book to the schoolyard.
One morning in April 2026, the courtyard of Ngoc Lam Primary School (Bo De Ward) suddenly transformed into a magical fairytale space. Gone were the rows of enclosed desks and chairs; the open space of the schoolyard became a place where literary characters, flesh and blood, stepped out of the pages of books. These included the mischievous boy Nam, the kind grandmother, the dignified benevolent old man, and the wicked demon king... from the children's play "Grandma's Story"—a prominent theatrical work written and directed by People's Artist Nguyen Trung Hieu, skillfully brought to life by the artists and actors of the Hanoi Drama Theatre.
The play skillfully and vividly integrates theatrical art with two familiar folk tales from the school curriculum: "The Orphan's Trial" and "The Legend of the New Year's Pole." The intelligence and resourcefulness of the Orphan character help protect the honest farmer, instilling in the children a profound lesson about righteousness and fairness. The symbol of the New Year's pole is recreated to help the children understand more about the custom of warding off evil spirits, praying for good fortune, and evoking pride in national culture.
Beyond just performing, the artists also created a hands-on experience for the students. In many segments, the artists skillfully incorporated direct interaction. After each scene, the resounding applause from the children was the clearest evidence of the impact and success of the work.

A vibrant tapestry of theaters in the capital city.
Not only the Hanoi Drama Theatre with plays like "The Grandmother's Story," "The Story of the Girl from Nam Xuong," "The Spirit of Physical Education," or the new work "Legend of Ho Guom Lake" (6th grade Literature), but the atmosphere of school theater in March, April, and May 2026 at Thuy Lam, Dong Du, Vinh Ngoc, Thach Ban A, Lien Mac B, Tan Lap schools... became more vibrant thanks to the participation of many art units, such as: Hanoi Cheo Theatre with plays "Quan Am Thi Kinh," "The Hundred-Jointed Bamboo Tree," "Cuoi and the Banyan Tree" which were modernized with Cheo forms and language in a witty, easy-to-understand way, close to the psychology of students. Thang Long Puppet Theatre, with its programs such as "Village Headman - Mother Dop" (rod puppets), "Swan Lake Dance" (hand puppets), "Trendy Old Lady" (string puppets)... creates a diverse audio-visual experience, stimulating students' imagination right in the schoolyard.
Ms. Vu Thi Binh, Principal of Lien Mac B Primary School (Yen Lang commune), said: “Through lively and emotionally rich theatrical performances, familiar characters and stories from literary works have been realistically portrayed, helping students better appreciate the beauty of national literature as well as the profound humanistic values of the works. The effectiveness of this model is not limited to one-way extracurricular activities but lies in comprehensive innovation from staging and interaction to skill teaching, aiming to form art clubs right within the school.”
As one of the participating units in the project, Meritorious Artist Tran Thi Hien, Director of Thang Long Puppet Theatre, expressed her hope that each performance would not only provide students with an engaging artistic program but also contribute to fostering a love of literature, cultivating aesthetic emotions, and spreading traditional cultural values to the younger generation of Hanoi.
Having participated from the very beginning of the project, the Hanoi Drama Theatre aims to achieve 200 performances and stage 6 new plays in 2026. People's Artist Nguyen Trung Hieu, Director of the Theatre, expressed his hope that this model will spread more widely, beyond Hanoi, to be implemented nationwide, becoming a national-level program. "The stage with its vivid effects will help students enjoy their books more, while simultaneously forming a generation of audiences and actors for the theatrical arts in the future," said People's Artist Nguyen Trung Hieu.
The vibrant activity surrounding the Hanoi School Theater Project in 2026 is not a spontaneous movement but a strategic step and concrete action to realize the spirit of Resolution No. 80-NQ/TW of the Politburo on the development of Vietnamese culture and Action Program No. 08-CTr/TU of the Hanoi City Party Committee, with the core objective that by 2030, 100% of students and trainees in the national education system will have access to, regularly participate in, and effectively engage in artistic activities and cultural heritage education.
When literature moves beyond the pages of books to the stage through form, sound, and light, art is no longer something distant but becomes an integral part of school life. This is a sustainable direction, a comprehensive educational method through experience, helping to sow the seeds of love for one's roots, cultivate character, and nurture the souls of the future leaders of the country.
