On June 15, Tuoi Tre Newspaper organized a discussion on "Full vaccination against infectious diseases for children and adults" in the context of a shortage of vaccines in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in many localities.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dac Phu, former Director of the Department of Preventive Medicine ( Ministry of Health ), vaccines are the most important achievement of the medical industry. Thanks to vaccines, we have eliminated smallpox since 1980, and now there are no more cases of smallpox in the world.
Vietnam also eliminated polio nationwide in 2000. And many diseases have been reduced by hundreds to thousands of times compared to before thanks to vaccines and the EPI Program.
“I have seen many diseases that I saw patients in every morning at the hospital’s infectious disease department, but now there are only a few cases each year. Measles is a disease that almost everyone in our generation has. Only the next generation that gets vaccinated will not get measles. With measles, vaccination provides very stable immunity…”, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dac Phu informed and said that thanks to vaccines, many serious diseases have become mild or completely eliminated.

Sharing at the discussion, Mr. Le Van Cong - the first Vietnamese athlete to win a Paralympic gold medal and set a world record in weightlifting for the disabled, said that during his pregnancy, his mother unfortunately contracted dengue fever, which left him with atrophied legs, a condition that he will carry with him for the rest of his life. Aware of the important role of vaccination, he has tried to fully vaccinate his two children.
As for Nguyen Thi Sari - a disabled female swimmer, she said she was born in Long An. When she was young, her family saw neighbors whose children had fevers after vaccination and her family did not vaccinate her. Unfortunately, when the incident happened, she contracted polio and had lifelong sequelae. From her own circumstances, hoping that her children would not suffer the same disadvantages as her mother, swimmer Nguyen Thi Sari was aware of the need to fully vaccinate her children against polio, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B, etc.
