Goji berries are good for health but not everyone can eat them.

According to Master, Doctor Nguyen Thu Trang, Department of Traditional Medicine, 108 Central Military Hospital, wolfberry is a familiar medicinal herb in traditional medicine, often appearing in tonics and health-preserving dishes.

This small red fruit is said to benefit the liver, kidneys, blood and eyes. However, not everyone can use wolfberry without experiencing side effects.

People who should not use goji berries

Goji berries are warm and sweet, good for people with yin deficiency and blood deficiency. People with symptoms of heat, fever, acute hepatitis or diarrhea should avoid using them because they can make the condition worse.

In these cases, the body is in a state of heat, if it receives additional warm tonics, it will cause an imbalance of yin and yang, causing unwanted reactions such as rash, hives, and heat in the body.

People with diabetes should also consider when using goji berries. Although goji berries have a lower glycemic index than many other fruits, consuming large quantities or combining them with rock sugar or honey can increase blood sugar levels.

In particular, people taking diabetes medication who take goji berries without regularly monitoring their blood sugar may experience sudden hypoglycemia.

Women who are menstruating, if they have menorrhagia or heavy vaginal discharge, should also be careful because goji berries can stimulate circulation, causing more blood to flow.

"Especially for children, because their bodies are still weak, their digestive systems are not yet fully developed, so using medicinal herbs with nutritional properties such as wolfberry requires a doctor's prescription," said Dr. Trang.

Precautions when using goji berries

Some parents arbitrarily give their children goji berry juice to “improve eyesight and intelligence” and may inadvertently cause digestive disorders, bloating, and indigestion. If this habit persists, it will affect the child’s physical development and nutrient absorption.

Elderly people using goji berries to improve memory and prevent aging also need to pay attention to the dosage. According to ancient documents, only 6-12g of dried goji berries should be used per day, depending on physical condition.

Overdose or daily use of goji berry wine without monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar can lead to unforeseen complications.

"It is best to use wolfberry in combination with other herbs in a clear prescription, rather than using it alone," Dr. Trang recommends.

Goji berries are precious medicinal herbs, but like any medicine or food, they need to be used by the right person, at the right time and in the right way to maximize their effectiveness and avoid unwanted consequences.
