Things to know if you're switching from an Intel CPU to an AMD CPU.

With Intel's reputation constantly being damaged, particularly by the issues surrounding its 13th and 14th generation CPUs, many people are considering switching to AMD when building their next PC. Is this a good idea?

Although Intel still maintains the majority of the CPU market share, AMD is closing in thanks to significant successes. Under pressure, Intel has had to innovate to make its processors more energy-efficient and better designed for artificial intelligence (AI) applications by integrating NPUs. However, these have encountered problems that Intel has been unable to fix through firmware updates.

Meanwhile, AMD continues its efforts into AI with the upcoming Zen 5 architecture generating more excitement. Even the Zen 4 architecture now has a notable addition, where the Ryzen 7 5800X3D impresses with its performance, giving users more options when it comes to saving money when building a PC. This CPU, priced at around 11.59 million VND, even outperforms the Core i9-13900K (priced at around 15.59 million VND) in general gaming benchmarks thanks to its 3D V-Cache technology.

However, AMD CPUs aren't particularly good at non-gaming tasks, especially in productivity. Therefore, many people might hesitate to switch from Intel CPUs. Here are some things users should consider before making the switch.

Budget savings

Cost has always been an advantage for AMD CPUs when it comes to custom-built PC systems, although Intel is showing a shift in perspective with Raptor Lake. To reduce costs, AMD has removed heatsinks from its (non-cheap) CPUs, citing the need to target gamers who often use third-party cooling solutions. As a result, their processors consistently strike a good balance between performance and cost.

AMD's advancements have led to the company ruthlessly removing older technologies from its motherboards. For example, motherboards for the current Ryzen generation only support DDR5, while motherboards for Intel still offer DDR4 RAM slots. As a result, if switching to a new generation AMD CPU from a system with DDR4 RAM, users must replace it with DDR5 RAM to get it to work.

Despite the inconvenience, DDR5 RAM is the future. Furthermore, AMD intends to support the AM5 socket for the Zen 4/5 generation for up to 5 years, meaning that if you switch to their processors, you won't have to worry about motherboard conflicts in subsequent upgrades.

Overclocking capability

Another area where AMD has historically outshone Intel is overclocking capabilities, but things are changing as Intel Z-series motherboards offer more overclocking options than Ryzen 7000 series. When overclocking, users can utilize each brand's own overclocking software, with AMD offering the user-friendly Precision Boost Overdrive, and Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility providing over 140 controls for convenient voltage and clock speed adjustments.

Note that when overclocking is required, AMD's more expensive processors will require purchasing a separate cooler (as they are not included), while Intel's will come with a standard cooler that offers less efficient cooling compared to dedicated solutions.

Stability and reliability

Stability issues on Intel's 13th and 14th generation Core CPUs have become a significant consideration, so if you're looking for a stable and reliable modern CPU, AMD is probably the best option right now. That's not to say the company's processors are without reliability issues; for example, they've only recently addressed a vulnerability in their new chips that has existed since 2006. The vulnerability, known as Sinkclose, could allow malicious users to extract information from a computer, although exploiting this flaw requires kernel-level access.
