Important things to know when buying a used iPhone

Here are some important things to know when buying a used iPhone.

1. Check physical condition

You need to deal directly to see the condition of the old iPhone. Remove the case and screen protector to see if the device has any scratches, cracks or dust, including the rear camera cluster.

If there are signs of serious damage, skip this used iPhone. If there are only small, unnoticeable marks, you can ask the seller to reduce the price further.

2. Identify iPhone model and specifications

Most iPhone models are similar to each other if you’re a first-time user. To find out exactly which model you have, go to Settings > General > About to see all the information about your device. Then, go to Apple or Google to see what year the iPhone was released, what the specs are, and what features it has.

The iPhone model is important because it relates to the ability to get operating system and security updates.

3. Make sure the iPhone is not stolen

If the previous owner of the iPhone hasn't removed their Apple Account from the phone, you won't be able to use it or set it up after you buy it. So make sure the seller has disabled Activation Lock before you buy it. Go to Settings > Apple Account > Find My iPhone . If Find My iPhone is off, that means Activation Lock is off.

4. Check battery status

Whether you buy in person or online, always check the battery health of your iPhone. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see the maximum capacity of your old iPhone. Don't buy a phone if its maximum capacity is below 80%, as Apple recommends replacing the battery once it falls below this threshold.

5. Check original components

Starting with iOS 15.2, Apple allows you to check your parts and repair history via Settings. Go to Settings > General > About. If your iPhone has ever been repaired, you'll see this on the screen. If genuine parts were used, there will be the word Genuine next to the part. Otherwise, it will say Unknown.

6. Check iPhone features and components

Test touchscreen, Face ID and Touch ID; Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular connectivity; microphone and speakers; front and rear cameras; charging.

7. Compare prices

Always check used iPhone prices between sellers and marketplaces to find the best deals. If the seller’s price is significantly lower than the average, this could be a sign of a scam.

8. Buy only from reputable sources

Whether you buy a new or used iPhone, choose a reputable place to ensure warranty or return policy. If you buy from an individual or a non-genuine store, you should try it for a few minutes to check the above.
