That day, we had a short appointment in a familiar small alley coffee shop. I chose a corner to sit by the window with a horizontal folding door, made of thin bamboo strips, painted a cool turquoise color, hanging down from above. The coffee shop has the only classic style left in the alley. The owner couple has white hair, their mouths are always smiling. On the shelf are a few books that have been stained by time, but perhaps they are so precious to the grandparents that they can't bear to throw them away.
You came, even though I had been informed, I was still confused when I saw your "semicolon" gait. You smiled, saying that I had chosen a good sitting angle. I was confused, I just liked to sit by the window, to be able to look outside, to watch the vehicles passing by. But unfortunately, it was past ten o'clock, the window was full of sunlight. The owner of the shop had untied the curtain string, lowered it near the edge of the window. You placed two cups of coffee on the table, and asked me to look. The light passed through the gaps at the seams between the curtain pieces, creating beautiful rays of light on the table, shining on the two glasses. As a photographer, you always carried a camera with you. And then, I had a moment to sit and ponder over a cup of coffee, the rays of light passing through the curtain shining on my hair, on my shoulders. The photo was naturally beautiful, without any need to edit any details.
Rays of light are the most wonderful thing in photography. It is when light finds its way into the cracks of things, shining its small but powerful light on everything, that the magic of the photo truly begins.
You said that was why you always looked for the most perfect natural light rays for your photos, not the photoshopped light rays. Then from the light rays in photography, you also found a light ray for your dark life. A traffic accident suddenly happened, taking away your left leg. During those days of desperate loss, you hid in the dark. It wasn't until you saw the photo of the light rays creeping into a rock cavity, nurturing a tiny sprout of the person you took the photo of, that you realized. You "semi-comma" went to the place to watch that tiny sprout, day by day, until it grew tall. Thanks to the crack in the rock cavity, the light shone in, the sprout has now become a tall tree sticking out, its roots have gone deep into the ground, spreading far and wide.
That ray of light not only nurtures a seedling, it also warms the despair that becomes the seed of hope in you. You return to life, living as if you had never lived before.
I looked back at the photo you took of me in the corner of the shop. The gentle rays of light clung to my shoulders as if to comfort and console me. At that moment, I knew how to accept the loss, to let go of the long-held attachments that had been stuck in my heart…
