Intelligent features of AI
As is customary, Apple unveils a new generation of iPhones every September. This September, Apple will launch four models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Expected to integrate many intelligent AI features, Apple showed us how the software running on its latest smartphones will differ from iOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last June. There, Apple first introduced iOS 18.
However, the latest iPhone rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 may not launch with advanced Apple Intelligence AI features, which connect all apps on the phone so they can communicate with each other – making Siri smarter. The new AI might not appear until iOS 18.1, which is expected to launch this October.
How much does the iPhone 16 cost?
Despite rumors of price increases amid the escalating global living standards crisis, tech experts still hope Apple will keep iPhone prices the same as last year, without raising them. If prices remain unchanged, the iPhone 16 will start at $1,016, the iPhone 16 Plus at $1,143, the iPhone 16 Pro at $1,270, and the iPhone Pro Max at $1,525.
iPhone 16 design and display

|
The rose gold (copper) color will be the most noteworthy color of the iPhone 16 lineup. |
1. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have larger displays.
Despite rumors about a larger display on the iPhone 16, many tech experts believe the screen size might be slightly larger depending on the model to accommodate the new camera design. For example, the regular iPhone 16 might maintain the same size, but the iPhone 16 Plus could be slightly larger.
2. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max may have thinner bezels.
The upcoming iPhone 16 series may also feature thinner bezels. According to the South Korean publication The Elec , iPhone display manufacturers have developed a new type of bezel structure technology that can reduce the size of the bezels, allowing companies to produce displays with smaller internal circuitry. The iPhone 16's OLED display may utilize micro-lens technology to save power and increase brightness.
3. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may be the brightest iPhones ever.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have displays with a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits – 20 percent higher than the 1,000 nits on the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone's SDR hasn't changed since the iPhone 13, so a 20 percent increase in brightness would be quite noticeable (if true).
4. The iPhone 16 Plus may be the last 6.7-inch basic iPhone model.
The iPhone 16 Plus may be the last basic iPhone model with a 6.7-inch screen. According to Young, the iPhone 17 Plus will have a smaller screen, sized between the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. This means the iPhone 17 Plus screen could shrink to 6.5 inches.
5. The iPhone 16 will have a more powerful action button.
The entire iPhone 16 lineup is also expected to feature a button similar to the one on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – replacing the mute button. The button will switch from a physical button to a capacitive touch button, allowing for more functionality.
The new action button will "have a force sensor, detecting changes in pressure, as well as an action switching function." While we're not sure what that means, we assume you'll be able to use the button to perform multiple actions instead of just the single programmed action as it currently does.
6. The iPhone 16 will have a new camera button.
The iPhone 16 will feature a new camera button designed for both video recording and still photography. This button will utilize haptic feedback. A quick press will activate autofocus, similar to a DSLR camera. A long press will take a photo, while swiping along the edge of the button will zoom in and out of focus, affecting both photos and videos.
7. The rear camera will be positioned differently to support space video recording.
Apple is also reportedly changing the camera array on the back of the basic iPhone 16. Leaked images of the iPhone 16 suggest the new cameras may be oriented vertically instead of diagonally. The iPhone 15 Pro currently uses stacked cameras for space video.
8. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will come in a rose gold color similar to copper.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will come in black, white, silver, or gray (essentially "natural titanium" in Apple's words) and a new pink color, meaning Apple may discontinue the titanium blue color of the iPhone 15 Pro line and replace it with the new pink.
The new iPhone 16 Pro Max colorway has a "copper" hue, possibly a new pink shade seen from a different angle.
9. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will come in seven colors.
The basic iPhone 16 will come in seven different colors. In addition to the gold, blue, green, black, and pink colors seen on the iPhone 15, white and purple are rumored to be added to this new product line.
10. The iPhone 16 will be equipped with the A18 chip.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are rumored to run on the A18, while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may have the A18 Pro chip. The A16 Pro is said to have more cores and an upgraded engine, enabling more AI features.
11. iPhone 16 fixes all overheating issues.
Apple is reportedly looking into the heat issue. The company may use a graphene heating system to address the overheating problem in the iPhone 16.
12. The iPhone 16 will have an upgraded Wi-Fi chip.
The Wi-Fi chip will be upgraded in both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro smartphone lines. The iPhone 16 Pro will support Wi-Fi 7, while the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will support Wi-Fi 6E, currently found on the iPhone 15 Pro.
13. The iPhone 16 has the longest battery life ever.
The iPhone 16 will utilize stacked battery technology, a technology currently used in the EV market. This could provide larger battery capacities, faster charging speeds, and higher-capacity wireless charging capabilities. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also predicted to have the longest battery life of all iPhone models ever produced.
14. The iPhone 16 will have tools for rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text.
The iPhone 16 with Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 will have completely new system-wide writing tools that allow users to rewrite, edit, and summarize text in virtually any app, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
15. You can create your own images through text.
Apple Intelligence will also include something called Image Playground, allowing you to create fun images in seconds using your own text prompts. You'll be able to choose from three different image styles – animated, illustrated, or sketched. Image Playground will be integrated directly into apps including Messages and in a dedicated app.
16. It is possible to create commemorative films and photographs using AI.
A new Photos feature for iOS 18 and iPhone 16 includes photo memories in the form of a movie. You'll be able to enter a description of what you want, and Apple Intelligence will take photos, arrange them into a movie with its own storyline and mood. Another Photos feature mimics Google's eraser tool found on Google Pixel, allowing you to remove distracting elements and people in the background from images.
17. Siri is smarter.
Siri, once considered a voice assistant, is finally getting an AI boost. It will become more natural, contextually relevant, and personalized, engaging in full conversations and understanding what you mean from previous prompts. It will gather various pieces of information from different parts of your iPhone to provide you with the information you need, searching your Calendar and Mail to display it.
18. AI features will run on the device until server-based models are needed.
iOS 18 will be intelligent enough to switch between on-device and server-based models, primarily relying on on-device AI to complete tasks running on Apple's dedicated silicon servers. Data in Private Cloud Compute will not be stored or accessed by Apple and will only be used to fulfill user requests.
19. The iPhone 16 Pro will have a better ultra-wide-angle camera and telephoto lens.
The iPhone 16 Pro will have a 48MP ultrawide camera, significantly higher than the 12MP ultrawide camera on the iPhone 15 Pro. Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max may also have a 12x telephoto lens, instead of just the Pro Max model.
Both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature a new advanced tetraprism telephoto lens. While the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses a tetraprism lens, allowing users to zoom up to 5x, the iPhone 15 Pro does not include this lens. Apple is reportedly planning to add this 5x tetraprism lens to both phones with the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.
20. Apple is researching anti-glare lenses.
Apple is currently testing an anti-reflective optical coating for the cameras on future iPhones. This coating, which will use "atomic deposition" to place an ultra-thin layer onto components, is said to help Apple eliminate lens flare. The coating will be implemented on Apple's next line of professional devices, although this may mean the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, not the iPhone 16 Pro.
