Locations to avoid installing security cameras

A fundamental mistake when installing security cameras is turning a protective shield into a trap that threatens privacy.

In the era of smart homes, equipping a security camera system has become a popular solution for millions of families to protect their property and loved ones. With modern features such as live viewing via app, secure cloud storage, and flexible pan and tilt control, cameras are like sleepless "eyes" guarding the home.

However, security experts warn that the effectiveness of a security system depends up to 80% on the placement of the equipment. A lack of hardware knowledge and haphazard camera installation not only renders the devices ineffective but also inadvertently turns them into tools for invading privacy, and even creates opportunities for cybercriminals to extort money from homeowners.

These are some locations where you should absolutely avoid installing security cameras.

A fatal mistake, and at the top of the warning list, is installing cameras in sensitive areas requiring privacy, such as bedrooms or bathrooms. Cameras are designed to provide a sense of security for family members, not to create anxiety and discomfort within one's own home.

More importantly from an information security perspective, if hackers crack the cloud storage account or camera password, private footage of family life will be leaked, becoming a weapon for blackmail. For these areas, a smarter solution is to use door/window open/close sensors to trigger an alarm when there is a break-in, instead of using cameras to record continuously.

Another common misconception is to position indoor cameras with their lenses pointing outwards through window glass to save on the cost of outdoor cameras. In reality, the reflection of daylight and infrared light at night from the glass creates a bright white glare, completely blinding the camera. Furthermore, pointing the camera dimly through a window can easily lead to legal trouble with neighbors for invasion of privacy.

Mechanical engineering flaws are 'stifling' the capabilities of AI.

Besides security considerations, understanding the physical limitations of the device is essential to avoid wasting money:

  • Narrow hallways : Placing the camera at the far corner of a narrow passageway will completely eliminate the camera's wide-angle view. Even with pan/tilt capabilities, what you'll capture is mostly just two blank walls. Move the camera to the corners where walls intersect to optimize the overall field of view.
  • Blind spots due to lighting : Installing cameras directly under high-powered ceiling lights or positioning them outdoors facing the sun will cause overexposure, preventing the AI algorithm from recognizing key details such as the face or license plate of a criminal.
  • Height misalignment : Installing an outdoor camera too high (over 3 meters) will only capture the top of the intruder's head or hat. Conversely, placing it too low (below 2 meters) will make the device easily disabled or vandalized by thieves. The recommended standard height is 2.5 - 3 meters from the ground.

Finally, users need to be aware of environmental factors that impact the camera over time. Leaving the camera completely exposed outdoors without a roof or placing it directly in areas with high heat will quickly reduce the lifespan of the optical sensor, damage the circuit board, and degrade the battery. Additionally, always carefully analyze the opening direction of doors in the house or the growth rate of tree branches in the yard to ensure the camera lens isn't unfortunately obscured after a few months of use.

A security camera system is only truly secure when properly installed. Take the time to review all the cameras in your home, adjusting any incorrect angles to ensure optimal viewing angles, safety, and privacy for your family.
