Trust eroded, how does Khanh Hoa football recover?

After the shock of the case of two former coaches Dang Dao and Nguyen Ty being prosecuted for embezzling more than 3.2 billion VND, Khanh Hoa football is facing a vital question: How to restore trust in the youth football training system?

Heartbreaking reality and community voice

Khanh Hoa, a land once famous for its training centers that produced a series of names such as Huu Dang, Tan Tai, Hoang Anh Tuan, etc., is now facing a crisis of trust. The successive violations at the Khanh Hoa Sports Technical Training Center (abbreviated as the center) have cracked the foundation of the entire youth football training system.

Mr. Nguyen Phuong Tuan, Director of Khatoco Khanh Hoa Club, frankly shared: "The center's ineffective youth training has caused many difficulties for the team. We have to spend a lot of time looking for players, and even have to spend more money to recruit players from other places."

However, Mr. Tuan still affirmed the local spirit: "Khanh Hoa Club's motto is still to prioritize selecting players from Khanh Hoa's youth team, in order to create opportunities for them to continue developing their football careers right in their hometown. However, selecting young players with skills and expertise is very difficult."

Mr. Tuan said that in the 2024-2025 national first division season, due to not being able to select enough players from the youth team for the team, Khanh Hoa had to borrow 3 U.21 young players from Thanh Hoa , 2 players from Binh Dinh and many players from other clubs. What is more worrying is that in the preparation for the 2025-2026 season, Khanh Hoa team has not yet found any qualified U.21 young players.

Not only the club's leadership, but also the fans expressed deep disappointment. Mr. Le Duc, a member of Khanh Hoa Supporters' Association, shared: "We have been with Khanh Hoa football for many years and have noticed a sad reality that many U.21 teams are trained systematically but in the end only play for amateur teams, very rarely promoted to the first team."

According to Mr. Duc, the root of the problem lies in the loose selection and management mechanism at the center. "If it is called a gifted sports center, then the input should be tested and the ability should be seriously assessed. But the coaches themselves recruit players just to have enough people, not putting quality first," Mr. Duc worried.

The lack of clear selection criteria and lax supervision have resulted in the state budget invested in youth training being wasted and training results not being as expected.

Correct from the root to save the whole system

Faced with the alarming situation, leaders of Khanh Hoa's sports industry have taken strong actions to restore confidence in the youth football training system.

Mr. Dang Quoc Van, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who was assigned to temporarily manage the Khanh Hoa Sports Technical Training Center, said that the center is implementing a series of drastic solutions, focusing on thoroughly handling shortcomings in management mechanisms, training processes and financial supervision.

One of the important changes is to strengthen the supervision of training activities. The Center will reorganize the Training Department, add more staff, and assign members to directly check, take attendance, and check the attendance of coaches every day via camera and be present at the training ground. This is to completely end the situation of coaches checking attendance themselves and falsifying training sessions as has happened for many years.

The process of paying benefits to athletes has been changed towards transparency, completely eliminating the situation of coaches keeping ATM cards and passwords to control and manipulate athletes' interests.

At the same time, the payment process for athletes has been changed towards transparency. All athletes aged 15 and over must be issued and directly hold an ATM card to receive money. Athletes under 15 will receive it directly from the accountant, with their parents accompanying them to sign for it. This is to completely eliminate the situation where coaches hold ATM cards and passwords to control and manipulate athletes' rights as before.

The center has organized propaganda and publicized the policies and regimes, from food allowances, daily wages to payment methods according to routes. The transparent announcement will help parents and athletes clearly understand their rights, minimizing the coaches' arbitrary setting of "grading scales" A, B, C, D to unfairly divide wages.

Another key point is reforming the recruitment process. Mr. Van said that an Athlete Selection Council will be established, chaired by the head of the center. At the same time, the recruitment and training regulations will be adjusted to reduce the number of routes, leaving only 3 main routes: recruitment, youth and talent.

In particular, the amateur route will be eliminated, a decision that clearly demonstrates the effort to cut waste and focus investment on truly talented athletes. Mass recruitment of "enough numbers" is no longer an option. Instead, only those with real ability will be trained, thereby improving output quality and avoiding budget loss.

Khanh Hoa youth football training needs a "major surgery" to regain fans' trust.

In addition, the center is also reviewing the capacity and professional qualifications of all coaches to arrange and reassign appropriately. Every month, the center holds a meeting with all coaches and staff to evaluate work results, remind about violations, resolve problems and propose a training plan for the following month.

These specific commitments demonstrate the leadership’s real efforts to comprehensively rectify the center’s operations. However, to regain lost trust, the important thing is not only the promulgation of regulations, but also practical effectiveness: the number of qualified players promoted to the first team, the quality of training and a safe and transparent training environment. If these resolutions are implemented thoroughly, with supervision from the community and the media, a “rebirth” of Khanh Hoa youth football can completely begin here.
