From early morning, many households in Phuoc Trung, Trung Ha, and Dong Ha villages (Hoi An ward) were busy harvesting chili peppers in the fields. However, the atmosphere this year is less cheerful due to low prices.

Mr. Phan Cong Thanh, head of the Farmers' Association in Trung Ha village, said that the entire village currently has 17 households growing chili peppers. Previously, chili peppers provided a stable source of income, so the villagers boldly expanded their production area. “In previous years, the price of chili peppers fluctuated between 30,000 and 40,000 VND/kg, so people made a profit. However, this year, the price is only about 10,000 VND/kg, and at times, traders don't even buy them. For each plot of land planted with chili peppers, people have to invest about 3 million VND in fertilizer, but when they harvest and sell the entire plot, they only earn about 700,000 VND,” Mr. Thanh shared.

Ms. Huynh Thi Cuong (residing in Trung Ha village) said that her family invested a considerable amount of money in this year's chili crop. However, when it came time to harvest, the price dropped sharply, making selling fresh chili almost unprofitable. "There were many ripe chilies, but traders bought few, so my family had to harvest them and dry them for preservation, waiting for the price to go up before selling," Ms. Cuong said.

According to Mr. Phan Quoc Huy, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hoi An Ward, the ward currently has about 14 hectares of land planted with chili peppers. From the beginning of the season, the association proactively monitored production and coordinated with businesses, small traders, and residents to support the consumption of agricultural products. Besides connecting with consumers, the Farmers' Association also guided its members in utilizing raw materials to process products such as dried chili peppers and clean ground chili peppers to enhance product value.

In the future, the association will implement the "Cam Kim Chili Powder" project to create a stable market for its members and develop a product that reflects the unique characteristics of the Hoi An countryside. The project will also promote digital transformation through the use of QR codes for traceability, product promotion on digital platforms, e-commerce sales, and the application of technology in order management.

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoai Bao, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Dien Ban Tay commune, said that the investment cost for chili cultivation is quite high, but the selling price is low, so farmers hardly make any profit. The commune's Farmers' Association aims to support farmers in applying scientific and technical advancements, building production linkage models, and seeking additional consumption channels to stabilize output and increase product value.

According to Ms. Le Thi Minh Tam, Chairwoman of the City Farmers' Association, the city currently has approximately 377 hectares of chili pepper cultivation, concentrated mainly in Hoi An ward, Dien Ban Tay commune, and Thu Bon commune. To support farmers in developing sustainable production, the association will strengthen connections with businesses and cooperatives to participate in product procurement and build a stable production-consumption chain. Simultaneously, it will enhance guidance for farmers on applying preservation and deep processing techniques to increase the value of agricultural products.

"In the context of a volatile market, the support of the government, mass organizations, and the proactive spirit of the people will help them overcome difficulties and continue to stay on their land and develop the economy ," Ms. Tam said.
