Outstanding community spirit

The storm passed, the heavy consequences of human and property posed special requirements for reconstruction and a group of architects worked with the responsible agencies to carry out this task. The project was called “Reconstruction of Nu and Nam Tong Villages”, the design team included architects Hoang Thuc Hao, Nguyen Xuan Ngoc, Vu Xuan Son...

The project was later awarded the Gold Prize of the 2024 National Architecture Award, taking into account that the architects and their collaborators not only overcame time pressure, but also met the criteria of sustainability, ecology, social environment and culture, identity, and lifestyle of ethnic minorities in the highlands. It is a typical example of the spirit of “architecture for people”.

More than half a year after the completion of the above project, on May 7, 2025, in Venice (Italy), the Organizing Committee of the Global Sustainable Architecture Award presented this award to architect Hoang Thuc Hao and 4 architects from other countries to honor those who have made important contributions to promoting the spirit of "architecture for people, for the community". Hoang Thuc Hao, who was once honored as an outstanding architect of Asia and received the Grand Prize of the World Association of Architects..., not only participated in the reconstruction of villages in Lao Cai but has long been widely known for his spirit of serving the community, especially the disadvantaged, ethnic minorities... He is a pioneer of humane and sustainable architecture, respecting the natural environment and indigenous culture, which is clearly demonstrated through dozens of major projects that he and his colleagues have participated in, in many regions in Vietnam.

Hoang Thuc Hao is recognized by the profession. And, it is the view that “architecture is not only about building buildings, but also about building people and communities; architects do architecture not to satisfy themselves, but to creatively connect with the community, for the community” that has helped him and like-minded people approach the meaningful title of “architect of the people”.
