The second season of the American post-apocalyptic drama television series The Last of Us is scheduled to premiere on HBO on April 13, 2025. Based on the video game series developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set 20 years after a mass fungal infection has caused its hosts to turn into zombie-like creatures and society to collapse. The second season, based on the game The Last of Us Part II (2020), continues to follow Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) five years after the events of the first season, and introduces a new character, Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).

HBO renewed The Last of Us for a second season less than two weeks after the first episode aired in January 2023. Although Joel claims that robbers attacked while Ellie was unconscious, the audience, and perhaps even Ellie, knows that Joel killed her to save her from death. Joel’s loving but also selfish decision sets the stage for the season’s conflict and tragedy.

The film jumps forward five years, exploring Joel and Ellie’s lives in Jackson Hole – a small community trying to rebuild civilization in a chaotic world. Ellie, now 19, has become tougher but still retains her signature sense of humor. She participates in community activities, learns to play guitar, and develops a relationship with Dina (Isabela Merced). However, the arrival of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), a survivor of the Salt Lake City massacre, threatens the peace of Jackson Hole. Abby is driven by revenge, and her presence raises questions about the line between justice and revenge, as well as what we do for ourselves and for others.

The season not only focuses on the conflicts between characters but also explores the post-apocalyptic world in more depth. From the epic shots of abandoned cities to the stunning natural landscapes, The Last of Us continues to impress with its top-notch production quality. The creatures infected with the Cordyceps fungus are still a major threat, but the real danger comes from humans themselves – who are forced to decide what is fair in a world without rules.
