Farmers expect rice prices to continue to increase

The summer-autumn rice crop in many localities of the province is entering the ripening stage, expected to be harvested in mid-August. After a period of low prices, from late July to early August 2025, rice prices began to increase slightly, creating a positive signal for farmers.

It is expected that by mid-August farmers will harvest the summer-autumn rice crop.

According to records, rice prices in some localities are fluctuating at a level higher than the beginning of the season by 200-500 VND/kg. Specifically, traders buy Dai Thom 8 variety at 7,000-7,200 VND/kg, OM18 at 6,500-6,700 VND/kg, and OM5451 at about 6,000 VND/kg. However, this price is still lower than the same period last year by 1,000-1,500 VND/kg, while input costs such as fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides have increased sharply, greatly affecting the profits of rice growers.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thi, a farmer in Phuoc Thuan 1 hamlet, Phuoc Long commune, is cultivating 30 hectares of OM18 rice variety. He said that his family's rice crop is currently in the flowering stage. Although the price of rice has shown signs of increasing, the high investment cost has resulted in a profit of only 1-2 million VND/hectare.

"The rice is growing quite well, the yield is probably about 700 kg/cong. However, this year the rice price is low, farmers do not make much profit. It will be harvested in about half a month, I hope the rice price is above 7,000 VND/kg then farmers will make a profit," Mr. Thi shared.

Rice prices tend to increase.

Besides prices, weather and pests are also major pressures for rice growers. The erratic weather in the summer-autumn crop has created favorable conditions for pests to develop, especially blast disease and brown planthoppers which appear frequently during the rice flowering stage.

Farmers apply mechanization to spraying pesticides.

While spraying pesticides to prevent brown planthoppers on nearly 30 hectares of rice of his family, Mr. Pham Van Ket, Phuoc Thuan 1 hamlet, shared: "This crop has a lot of pests, the cost of fertilizer and pesticides is about 2 million VND/hectare. Currently, some households have started harvesting, traders buy about 6,600-6,650 VND/kg. When the harvest season comes, I hope to reach a rice price of 7,000 VND/kg to make a profit."

According to the agricultural sector, to ensure stable output and improve production efficiency, farmers need to proactively link with purchasing enterprises and cooperatives, while increasing the application of advanced farming methods and reducing input costs./.
