Farmers hope fertilizer prices will soon decrease again

Recently, the price of rice and many other crop products has not been as high as last year, but the price of many types of fertilizers has been continuously increasing over the past 3 months. Up to now, the price of many types of fertilizers has skyrocketed to a very high level compared to the beginning of 2025 and compared to the same period last year.

Prices are rising

Compared to early 2025, the current prices of many types of inorganic fertilizers (chemical fertilizers) have increased from several tens of thousands of VND to several hundreds of thousands of VND per 50 kg bag of fertilizer. The sharpest price increases are for some types of DAP and nitrogen fertilizers (urea fertilizer). The increase in prices for NPK, potassium and phosphorus fertilizers is smaller.

On May 9, the prices of nitrogen fertilizers (Urea) such as Phu My Fertilizer, Ca Mau Fertilizer, Ninh Binh Urea and some types of Urea imported from China were retailed at many agricultural supply stores in Can Tho City and many neighboring provinces in the Mekong Delta at 600,000-650,000 VND/bag. This price is about 70,000-100,000 VND/bag higher than at the beginning of the year and about 80,000-140,000 VND/bag higher, depending on the type compared to the same period last year. Notably, the price of Chinese DAP (Hong Ha green grain type) at the beginning of the year was only 950,000-1,000,000 VND/bag, but has now increased to 1,450,000-1,500,000 VND/bag. Compared to the same period last year, the price is about 450,000-510,000 VND/bag higher. Currently, many other types of DAP fertilizer are also sold at quite high prices. The price of Korean DAP is from 1,200,000-1,300,000 VND/bag; Chinese DAP with yellow grains and Russian DAP with black and green grains are at 960,000-1,100,000 VND/bag. The price of NPK 20-20-15 Ba Con Co and Binh Dien is at 1,000,000-1,100,000 VND/bag. The price of Potassium (Russia, Belarus, Israel) is at 460,000-580,000 VND/bag. Phosphate fertilizer (Long Thanh) costs 250,000-260,000 VND/bag, phosphate (Van Dien) is at 300,000-320,000 VND/bag... Fertilizer prices increase not only due to domestic supply and demand factors but also influenced by the world market. Currently, our country still has to import many types of fertilizers and raw materials to produce fertilizers. Recently, the prices of many types of fertilizers on the world market have fluctuated and increased, and many input costs for fertilizer production and business such as electricity, gasoline, labor costs, transportation costs... have also increased and remained at high levels, directly affecting the selling prices of domestic fertilizers. Importing some types of fertilizers has encountered difficulties and incurred additional costs, affecting supply and selling prices. Many types of fertilizers, when reaching consumers, have to go through many intermediaries, leading to higher selling prices compared to prices at manufacturing plants and import centers. The high prices of many types of fertilizers have caused difficulties for farmers and those involved in fertilizer trading and retailing, and they hope that prices will soon decrease again. Mr. Do Van Tung, owner of Tung Lan agricultural supplies store in Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city, said: "In recent days, the prices of most types of fertilizers have tended to stagnate and no longer continue to increase, so I hope that prices will decrease again in the near future. Currently, fertilizer purchasing power has also decreased significantly compared to previous months, because farmers in many places have applied fertilizer for the second and third times for the 2025 summer-autumn rice crop, so the demand for fertilizer has decreased." According to Mr. Tung, the high prices of fertilizers not only increase the production costs of rice and many crops, affecting and reducing farmers' profits, but also cause many difficulties for fertilizer retailers. Stores not only find it difficult to make a profit, but also need to add more capital for their business, leading to possible difficulties in capital. When fertilizer prices increase, many stores often have to be cautious in taking in goods and limit letting farmers buy on credit because they are afraid of having difficulty recovering debts and fear that if fertilizer prices drop sharply again, they will suffer heavy losses if there is still a large amount of inventory.

Hope fertilizer quality is guaranteed and price is reduced

Farmers are concerned about the high price of fertilizers, which increases the cost of producing rice and many other crops, and creates many risks, threatening production efficiency. At the same time, farmers are also worried about a sharp decrease in profits as recently the price of rice and many other crops has not been able to maintain the high price as in the same period last year.

Mr. Le Van Hai, a rice farmer in Dong Thanh hamlet, Dong Thuan commune, Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city, said: "Recently, the profits of rice farmers have decreased sharply due to the double impact of falling rice prices and rising fertilizer prices and many input production costs. I really hope that fertilizer prices will soon decrease again and rice prices will improve. Currently, the prices of many types of rice have decreased by 1,500-2,000 VND/kg compared to the winter-spring and summer-autumn rice crops last year, but the prices of fertilizers have increased. It is worth mentioning that not only the prices of imported fertilizers have increased, but many types of nitrogen fertilizers produced domestically have also increased sharply. Farmers have to buy Ca Mau and Phu My nitrogen fertilizers at 630,000-650,000 VND/bag. Chinese green grain DAP costs 1,500,000 VND/bag, this is the highest price in many years". Mr. Huynh Van Tien in Truong Trung A hamlet, Tan Thoi commune, Phong Dien district, also said: "Farmers growing durian and many other types of fruit trees have also seen their profits decrease due to the increase in fertilizer prices and many other types of input materials, increasing costs, while the selling price of fruit is not as high as last year. The selling price of many types of durian is 25,000-30,000 VND/kg lower than last year. For more favorable production, farmers really hope that fertilizer prices will soon decrease sharply again."

The increase in fertilizer prices has also caused many farmers to face difficulties in capital investment for production, especially when agricultural supply stores limit selling on short or only allow buying on short of a portion of fertilizer. Farmers really hope that the authorities will promptly find solutions to reduce the prices of fertilizers and agricultural supplies. Pay attention to stabilizing the output of rice and other agricultural products so that people can feel secure in production. On the other hand, strengthen the inspection and management of the market to ensure the quality of fertilizers, avoid fake and poor quality goods. According to Mr. Cao Ngoc Lac in Truong Lac ward, O Mon district, Can Tho city, the authorities need to pay attention to strictly controlling the market to ensure the quality of fertilizers and avoid the situation of fertilizers being sold at unreasonably high prices. Currently, farmers are very worried that bad guys will take advantage of the high prices of fertilizers to bring to the market fertilizers with lower prices but of poor quality or take advantage of the high demand in the market to trade in fake and poor quality fertilizers.

To help farmers improve the efficiency of crop production, the relevant authorities need to increase training activities, guide farmers to promote the application of scientific and technical advances and proactively prevent pests and diseases... to reduce costs, save money on fertilizers and pesticides. Encourage units and businesses to strengthen links with farmers in the production and consumption of agricultural products and create conditions for farmers to buy fertilizers with guaranteed quality and reasonable prices.
