In recent years, the concept of "clean from farm to table" has become more and more widely known, gradually becoming one of the standards of consumers. In the mountainous district of Vo Nhai, many households are making efforts to approach green agriculture, to overcome the situation of food insecurity, environmental pollution and bring high economic efficiency.
The organic vegetable production model of Mr. Hoang Manh Tuan, Na Khao hamlet, Phu Thuong commune (Vo Nhai) is showing quite good results. |
Graduated from Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, Hoang Manh Tuan, Na Khao hamlet, Phu Thuong commune (Vo Nhai) has tried many different jobs but found them unsuitable. In 2022, he decided to return to his hometown and start a business from his family's vegetable garden.
Mr. Hoang Manh Tuan: I chose to grow organic vegetables, a method that is still quite new to the people in the highlands. At first, when they saw me spending hundreds of millions of dong to build a greenhouse and grow all kinds of strange varieties such as bell peppers, chocolate tomatoes, spinach, rainbow chard, etc., the people around me were still "sceptical" because they thought that this method was both expensive and laborious while the results were not high.
Determined to change the agricultural production method that has been "deeply rooted" for generations, Mr. Tuan still perseveres in growing organic vegetables according to the "6 no" principle (no chemical fertilizers; no pesticides; no growth stimulants; no herbicides; no genetically modified varieties; no preservatives) to ensure the health of growers and consumers. To date, he has a 1,500m2 greenhouse, growing seasonal leafy vegetables. On average, each year, he harvests about 5 tons of vegetables, earning over 200 million VND.
According to Mr. Tuan, the most valuable result he has received is not economic efficiency but the fact that local people have gradually changed their mindset, limiting the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Mr. Tuan said: It will take a long time for people to completely change, but the good news is that the concept of green production and organic agriculture has become increasingly popular in the locality.
The family of Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, in Hop Nhat hamlet, Trang Xa commune (Vo Nhai) invested 100 million VND to build a greenhouse to grow fruit trees. |
For the safe fruit tree production model of Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, in Hop Nhat hamlet, Trang Xa commune (Vo Nhai), consumption in the early stages was relatively difficult. He said: To produce safely, I invested quite a lot. Building a greenhouse alone cost about 100 million VND, in addition to the cost of land improvement, clean water supply, biological products, etc.
However, in the beginning, safe melons, apples, and grapefruits were sold at the same price as fruits grown in the traditional way. It was not until I connected with some supermarkets and clean food stores that the selling price of the products improved. - Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan
Not stopping at individual models, the conversion of agricultural production and livestock farming towards green is one of the important goals set by Vo Nhai district in implementing the National Target Program on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas. Up to now, the whole district has nearly 500 hectares of fruit trees certified by VietGAP; more than 200 hectares of tea produced according to VietGAP and organic standards.
In the coming time, the district will continue to support people to develop production according to value chains suitable for each region; exploit potential advantages in the direction of effectively transforming crop and livestock structures, creating jobs, increasing income for households, and sustainably reducing poverty.
