Việt NamViệt Nam01/10/2023

In Ninh Thuan province , the project is being implemented in 15 communes across 4 districts: Ninh Son, Bac Ai, Thuan Bac, and Ninh Hai, with a total investment of over 143 billion VND. To date, 80 ponds have been completed for local residents to store water, and it is expected that 109 ponds in phase 1 will be completed by October 10th, ensuring the project stays on schedule.

The project “Strengthening the Resilience of Small-Scale Agriculture to Water Security from Climate Change in the Central Highlands and South Central Region - Ninh Thuan” (SACCR - Ninh Thuan) is funded by a grant from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and implemented in the provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, and Khanh Hoa. The project duration is 5 years (2021-2026), aiming to enhance the adaptability of vulnerable smallholder farmers to water insecurity caused by climate change.

In Ninh Thuan province, the project is implemented in 15 communes across 4 districts, including Ninh Son, Bac Ai, Thuan Bac, and Ninh Hai, with a total investment of over 143 billion VND. The project is divided into two components with various activities such as technical support and investment activities, specifically: Component 1: Strengthening water security for agricultural production of vulnerable smallholder farmers in the context of fluctuating rainfall and drought due to climate change; Component 2: Increasing livelihood resilience for smallholder farmers through climate-adaptive agricultural production and access to climate, financial, and market information. The project benefits 30,980 households, including 1,577 households that will have access to water for small-scale agricultural production, 41 groups managing shared ponds, 2,758 smallholder farmers receiving investment support through certificates and vouchers from training courses, and 7,073 households receiving training. In Phase 1, the project will construct 109 drought-relief water storage ponds in four districts: Ninh Son, Bac Ai, Thuan Bac, and Ninh Hai. To date, over 80 ponds have been completed, and construction is underway on the remaining ponds.

The family of Ms. Kator Thi Niu in Tham Du village, Phuoc Trung commune (Bac Ai district) received support.

Digging ponds to store water for agricultural production and livestock farming.

The family of Ms. Katơr Thị Niêu in Tham Dú village, Phước Trung commune, owns more than 8 sao (approximately 0.8 hectares) of farmland near the foot of the mountain. Previously, due to the lack of a reliable irrigation source, crops like corn, mung beans, and sesame yielded inconsistent harvests. In early September this year, her family was delighted to receive support from the SACCR-Ninh Thuận Project to dig a pond to store over 2,000 cubic meters of water. Ms. Niêu happily shared: "Farming in this area is more difficult than in other parts of the commune because the farmland is located at a higher elevation and near the foot of the mountain, not benefiting from irrigation water from reservoirs. We are very happy to receive support to dig a pond to store water on our farm. With a stable water source, we can improve the land for rice cultivation and grow grass for livestock farming to develop our family's economy ."

Mr. Luu Quoc Tuan, Deputy Director of the SACCR-Ninh Thuan Project Management Board, said: In order to accelerate progress before the rainy season to store water for agricultural production for people in the beneficiary localities, the Project Management Board has been directly supervising, monitoring, and regularly inspecting the construction site. Regarding progress, 80 ponds have been completed for people to store water, and it is expected that by October 10th, the construction of 109 ponds in phase 1 will be completed, ensuring the set schedule.
