Ms. Vuong My Ha (48 years old) is currently the director of a consulting company in Qingdao City (China). In 1994, she was admitted to Hefei University of Technology (Anhui Province) with 628 points. After graduating from university, she studied for a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Ocean University of China.

3 years of planning

After 25 years of working in the consulting field, she decided to start a new career in her twilight years. In 2023, she took the university entrance exam for the second time and enrolled in the Traditional Medicine major. With a score of 458/750, the 48-year-old female director officially became a new student at Shandong College of Traditional Medicine.

3 years ago, she had health problems so she learned about traditional medicine. During that process, she found her passion, so she decided to take the university entrance exam for the second time to study this field.

The 48-year-old female director confided: "For many years, I have been involved in the consulting industry, but the older I get, the less I can update my knowledge as compared to younger people. Luckily, I found my passion for traditional medicine at this age."

The 48-year-old new medical student hopes that after graduation, this will be a job that will last her life: "Because of my love for traditional medicine, I am full of hope for my retirement." At first, she thought it would be very difficult to compete and that the chances of passing were low. But with her passion, she took the risk to register for the university entrance exam for the second time.

Going to university again, for her, is not only to gain new knowledge, but also to contribute to the country's medicine. The female director is supported by her whole family: "This is a plan I have cherished for the past 3 years, but I only started studying from mid-2022. At that time, all the housework was taken care of by my husband."

1.5 months to read 6 Math books

When she started the exam preparation process, she spent 1.5 months re-reading 6 high school math textbooks . "After reading the books, I thought the questions weren't too difficult. But when I started doing them, I realized the gap between theory and practice was huge. To take the recent exam, I had to focus all my energy on studying," the 48-year-old freshman confided.

Vuong My Ha said that she had her daughter guide her through the process of reviewing Math and Biology: "She taught and systematized the knowledge for me. I paid a 'tutor', but after a while she got bored of teaching, so I had to study by myself." She shared that these were the two most difficult and 'nightmare' subjects.

For Chinese, History and Geography, she reviewed the knowledge in textbooks and documents by herself. Her work in recent years has used English, so reviewing this subject is not difficult. "At the age of 48, studying is not easy for me, it is difficult to remember and I often lose focus," she shared. During the exam review period, she felt like she was back to her student days: "Because I set clear goals, I was very focused, so the results achieved were relatively good."

Balancing work and studying

Her job is quite busy, it is difficult to have time to review every day. But she still tries to balance between work and exam preparation. She takes advantage of the weekend to focus on studying.

Two weeks before the exam, she handed over her work to her colleagues to save time to prepare. "At this time, I systematized the knowledge I had reviewed over the past year. At the same time, I also tried to thoroughly solve the simulation questions and grasp the basic knowledge so as not to lose points unfairly," the new medical student shared.

She said that even though her husband was with her on the day of the exam, she was still nervous when she entered the room. "When I arrived at the exam site, the first day the security guard thought I was a parent, so he wouldn't let me in. After that, I had to explain, but the security guard smiled and let me through," she recalled.

"At the exam site, I was the oldest candidate so I became the center of attention. Every time I entered and exited the exam room, they looked at me with encouraging eyes. At that moment, I felt that my choice was right," Ms. Vuong My Ha received strength from many people.

She shared that on the final day of the exam, the security staff shouted loudly to cheer her on: "Keep it up, Vuong My Ha!". "Thinking back now, I still feel warm. I realized that pursuing knowledge does not depend on age. As long as you have the courage to learn, dare to challenge yourself and always make an effort, I believe anyone can do it," she said.

After 1 year of studying for the exam and 3 years of nurturing her dream, she achieved 458/750 points. Of which, the highest score was 110/150 in English, 96/150 in Chinese, 52/150 in Math, 60/100 in Biology, and 70/100 in History and Geography.

"Because my goal is to study Traditional Chinese Medicine, I researched schools. I knew that my score would only get me into Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Therefore, I made a definite choice," she said. Although the score was not as expected, the woman was still happy because her wish was fulfilled.

48 years old starting a new career

After handing over her work at the company, she spent time focusing on her studies at school. Sharing about her first days of integrating into the new environment, she said: "I studied with a group of "young classmates", even younger than my daughter. Compared to them, my ability to be quick will be less. I need to adapt mentally and learn at the same speed as the class. But I believe that studying is not only for young people".

After more than a month of intensive study, Vuong My Ha said everything is fine. In the future, after graduation, she plans to continue her studies at university in this major.

"I consider studying at this time as the second stage of my career development. 25 years ago, I started my first career. I believe there is still time for me to go from a beginner to an expert in this field," she said.

At her old age, she sees this as the beginning of a new phase of her life. In her plan, she will still spend the next 10-15 years learning and accumulating knowledge. Because she believes that when she is 65 years old, she can still apply the knowledge she has learned to contribute to society. The female director hopes that her story will motivate young people to devote themselves to researching and inheriting traditional Chinese medicine.
