On the morning of May 31st, Ngo Vo Tuong Vy (a student from Le Hong Phong Secondary School, Con Dao Special Zone) arrived at the exam location at Vo Truong Toan Secondary School, Saigon Ward. After checking the exam room list, she left her backpack and went to the room early to prepare.
According to Mr. Tran Hai Binh (head of the examination center), Tuong Vy is the only student from Con Dao participating in this year's entrance exam for public high schools.
In the Con Dao Special Zone and Thanh An island commune, junior high school graduates are admitted to 10th grade based on their academic records instead of having to take an entrance exam. However, Vy still decided to register for the entrance exam at public high schools on the mainland to have more opportunities.
Vy said that she and her mother went to the mainland five days ago to prepare for the exam. Since the beginning of 9th grade, her family had planned for her to continue her studies on the mainland so she could have the opportunity to interact with teachers and friends who are more academically capable.
"I'm also sad about having to leave home so early, but I accept it to improve my studies and hope to pursue English Pedagogy in the future and become a teacher," Vy shared.
The female student applied to Tay Thanh High School, Nguyen Thai Binh High School, and Nguyen Thi Dieu High School. If accepted, she will live with her aunt to make studying easier.
Vy expects to score around 7 points in each subject, but she's still not entirely confident because she's had limited opportunities to familiarize herself with the exam format used in Ho Chi Minh City. Since her school doesn't organize separate review sessions, she mainly studies on her own and practices exam questions under the guidance of teachers in her extra classes.
"The 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City is different from the types of questions I've studied before," the female student expressed.

This morning (May 31st), over 151,000 students in Ho Chi Minh City arrived at examination centers to complete the procedures for the entrance exam to public high schools for the 2026-2027 school year. This is the final preparation step before they take the official exam on June 1st and 2nd.
This year, the 10th grade entrance exam is the largest ever held in Ho Chi Minh City. A new feature of the exam is that the transportation and delivery of exam papers began on May 31st, one day earlier than the official exam date, to meet the requirements of organizing the exam across a larger area after the administrative boundaries were expanded.
