Female student uses AI to manage pilot fatigue.

For Minh Khue, aviation is not a childhood dream or a fleeting moment of inspiration, but a choice formed from moments of quiet reflection and introspection.

As one of the first students of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aeronautics) program at RMIT Vietnam, Khuu Minh Khue not only forged her own path but also quietly paved the way for future generations.

From top academic initiatives to winning a graduation project applying AI to flight safety, her journey is inspired by those whose destination lies not in the sky, but in the lecture halls where their first dreams are nurtured.

Step out of your comfort zone to find yourself.

After choosing a university, Khue began searching for a major that suited her personality – a management-oriented field, in-depth but not overly technical, and clear enough for her to envision her future. At that time, RMIT Vietnam had just launched its Aviation program, which, although quite new and challenging, was exactly what Khue was looking for.

"This program meets all my expectations – in terms of structure, international orientation, and clear direction," she said.

"I did my own research, discussed it with my family, and although they were a little surprised at first, everyone supported me."

Maintain high spirits through each experience.

Over three years of study, Minh Khue not only stood out for her excellent academic achievements but also for being a pioneer in building the aviation student community at RMIT. As the first student academic support member of RMIT's Peer Support Program (PAL), Khue quickly became a familiar face to freshmen as a leader, mentor, and sometimes, an inspiration.

Michael Valley, PAL Program Manager, praised Khue's impact: "Khue is an outstanding academic support student. She supports other students in their studies, while also encouraging them to think critically and independently. Many students return because they trust Khue due to her dedication, professionalism, and warmth."

In addition, Khue also serves as a student representative for the Aviation major. She conveys students' opinions clearly and constructively, earning the respect of both her classmates and the department.

The biggest challenge for Khue during her studies was completing her final project. However, this project earned her and her group the award for the best final project in their major.

The project, "AI Application for Pilot Fatigue Management , " has addressed a particularly complex yet highly practical problem in the aviation industry. The team proposes using AI to assess and manage pilot fatigue during the pre-flight phase, based on facial recognition and eye movement analysis. The system categorizes fatigue levels as low, medium, or high, and issues alerts if a pilot is deemed insufficiently alert to fly.

"Assessing fatigue levels is often based on rest schedules, but this doesn't always accurately reflect a person's true state. Our project offers an objective and proactive solution, allowing for timely intervention to ensure safety," Khue shared.

Despite lacking a technical background in AI, Khue and her team pursued this idea because it relates to aviation safety. The project received high praise from the judging panel for its creativity and practical thinking.

In addition to her studies, Khue also did an internship at VietJet Air's flight operations department to gain direct experience with the practical operations of an airline.

"During my internship, I learned to be more flexible, ask better questions, and gain a clearer understanding of the industry," she said.

Another memorable milestone in her journey was a study tour to Barcelona with RMIT's Global Citizen Leadership Program. Khue participated in a world smart city exhibition, met international friends, and presented her ideas to local leaders.

"That experience broadened my worldview. I realized that global thinking doesn't necessarily have to start in a faraway place; it can begin right here in the classroom, in every conversation and project," she shared.

For Khue, "maintaining high standards" is not just about maintaining academic achievements, but also about having a proactive, responsible attitude and a continuous learning spirit in the face of every challenge – qualities of a leader and perhaps one day also of an educator.

Fly far away to come back.

As she concludes her university journey, in addition to focusing on her immediate career, Khue also harbors the goal of returning to the classroom and inspiring the next generation. Right now, she is eager to take the next step and actively seeking job opportunities where she can contribute and gain practical experience after graduation.

"I want to start working first to better understand the industry, gain practical experience, face challenges, and grow," Khue shared.

"Pursuing a master's degree has always been a long-term plan for me, not only to enhance my expertise but also to be able to return to teaching in the field I love. This is a goal I'm determined to achieve, so I'm actively seeking scholarship opportunities to make this academic journey a reality."

Khue's ambitions never stopped at titles or degrees. During her studies, Khue realized that her greatest joy came not only from learning, but also from spreading knowledge, helping others develop and find their own paths. This realization sparked her dream of becoming a lecturer, just like the teachers who inspired her.
