Half a century of Mexico-Vietnam diplomatic relations: Building the future together

Exactly 50 years ago, on May 19, 1975, Mexico and Vietnam officially established diplomatic relations.

This milestone marks the official beginning of the relationship between the two countries, which have many similarities in their commitment to protecting a core principle: preserving and protecting national sovereignty under all circumstances.

Two great leaders, President Benito Juárez and President Ho Chi Minh, have outlined the path and intersection between the two peoples, values that remain intact today. In 1867, the eminent President of Mexico affirmed: “Between individuals as well as between nations, respect for the rights of others is peace .” Meanwhile, in 1946, the great leader of Vietnam wrote: “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom,” a saying solemnly engraved in the National Liberation Heroes Square, where the monument to the Vietnamese Hero is located, right in the historical center of the Mexican capital.

Mexico is now the 12th largest economy in the world and with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s “Plan Mexico,” the country aims to rapidly rise to become one of the top 10 economies globally, with at least 100 new industrial parks, and be among the top 5 tourist destinations in the world.

Mexico is also the world's 9th largest exporter, but above all, it is known for its great ancient civilizations, its unique cuisine and its 33 cultural and natural heritage sites recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is one of the world’s most dynamically developing countries, having achieved remarkable economic success in just one generation. Vietnam aims to become an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a developed economy by 2050.

In addition to their steadfast stance in defending their sovereignty and their increasingly important role in the international arena, Vietnam and Mexico have found common ground in a wide range of areas. Over the past six years, Mexico has made historic strides in poverty reduction and has actively promoted an initiative in international forums to dedicate 1% of global military spending to supporting the most disadvantaged communities.

Vietnam, meanwhile, is widely recognised for its impressive achievements in socio-economic development, with multidimensional poverty now falling below 3%. Both countries have made significant strides in building inclusive societies, with distinct approaches and development models, but share a strong commitment to improving the quality of life and well-being of their people.

The similarities between Mexico and Vietnam go beyond identity and shared principles. In recent years, thanks to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), economic relations between the two countries have grown significantly. However, this growth has been accompanied by a large trade deficit on the Mexican side, which shows the urgent need to improve access to the Vietnamese market for Mexican products.

The Mexican and Vietnamese economies are also complementary thanks to their strategic geographic locations – Mexico in North America and Vietnam in Southeast Asia – along with complementary supply chains and the enormous potential for cooperation opened up through the CPTPP, especially in areas such as agriculture, food, technology and manufacturing.

There is no doubt that the meeting between President Claudia Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Rio on November 18, 2024 clearly demonstrated the political commitment of both sides to continue promoting common goals... (Ambassador Alejandro Negrín)

Mexico and Vietnam have a clear vision for the future of their bilateral relationship, reflecting the maturity and depth that the relationship has reached. Both countries are working to advance important agreements in areas such as agriculture, customs, air transport and defense cooperation — key building blocks for increased connectivity and deeper cooperation in strategic areas.

In addition, the two countries continue to make daily efforts to strengthen connections between universities and promote cultural exchanges, as demonstrated by the recent display of a replica of an Olmec head at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, as well as statues of President Ho Chi Minh in Mexico City and many other places in Mexico.

At the same time, activities to strengthen academic and cultural cooperation were also promoted, with a focus on promoting exchanges between universities and enhancing mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Mexico and Vietnam celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations as two independent nations with significant economic influence on the international stage and a shared desire to strengthen their cooperation. Looking to the future, both countries believe that the relationship between Mexico and Vietnam still has great potential and that, together, they can contribute to a world based on international law, cooperation and peace.
