US President Joe Biden has pledged a peaceful and orderly transfer of power, while President-elect Donald Trump has begun appointing personnel for his upcoming administration.

Biden's message

In a speech at the White House on the morning of November 7 (US time), President Biden urged Americans to "cool down" after the Republican victory and sought to reassure Democrats worried about the return of former President Trump, according to Reuters. "Defeats are inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable. Defeat doesn't mean we're defeated," Biden said. The incumbent emphasized that the November 5 election demonstrated the integrity of the American electoral system and pledged an orderly transfer of power. Biden also invited Trump to the White House, and Trump's campaign said the president-elect would attend.

Earlier, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told troops that the Pentagon would conduct an orderly transfer of power to the incoming administration of President-elect Trump. "As always, the U.S. military will be prepared to implement the policy choices of the next commander-in-chief and comply with all lawful orders from its civilian chain of command," Secretary Austin emphasized in his November 6 message to troops. He also affirmed that the U.S. military would remain separate from politics and continue to defend the country, the Constitution, and the rights of all American citizens.

First staff

Also on November 7th, President-elect Trump announced that Susie Wiles (67 years old), one of his two campaign managers, would be the White House Chief of Staff. "Susie will continue to work tirelessly to make America great again. It is a great honor to have Susie as the first female Chief of Staff in American history," Trump emphasized.

This is the first personnel announcement made as Mr. Trump prepares to return to the White House on January 20, 2025. AFP and Reuters yesterday also listed several leading candidates for other key positions in President-elect Trump's upcoming administration. Those being considered for Attorney General include Senators Mike Lee, Eric Schmitt, and John Ratcliffe, and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. With Mr. Trump's declaration of mass deportations of undocumented immigrants and his ongoing legal battles, the nominee for Attorney General will hold one of the most sensitive and challenging jobs.

Regarding the position of Secretary of State, potential candidates include former Ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell, Senator Marco Rubio, former National Security Advisor Robert C. O'Brien, and Senator Bill Hagerty. The next US Secretary of State will play a key role in implementing Trump's "America First" foreign policy and is likely to see major changes in US alliances, according to AFP.

Regarding the positions of Secretary of Defense and Director of the CIA, America's foreign allies will closely monitor the nominees for these two crucial roles. Potential candidates for Secretary of Defense include Congressman Michael Waltz and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Additionally, former Chief of Staff of the US Department of Defense Kash Patel and Senator John Ratcliffe are considered potential candidates for future CIA Director.

On the same day, Trump said he had not yet spoken with Putin, but indicated he would negotiate with the Russian leader. Chinese President Xi Jinping also sent a congratulatory message to Trump on November 7, emphasizing that the two countries must "find the right way... to get along in this new era, benefiting both of us and the world," according to CCTV.
