Sturgeon is the common name of a genus of fish with the scientific name Aci penser, including 21 species recorded in scientific reports. These are large freshwater fish with high economic value, preferring to live in cool environments, clean natural water sources, and high dissolved oxygen levels.
In Vietnam, sturgeon was imported for breeding and experimental farming in Sa Pa ( Lao Cai ) since 2000, then expanded to many other localities across the country.
Currently, in Vietnam, there are 4 species of sturgeon being farmed in over 20 provinces in the Northern mountainous regions and the Central Highlands: Siberian sturgeon, Beluga sturgeon, Russian sturgeon and Sterlet sturgeon.
Vinh Phuc province is located in the transitional area between the midlands, mountains and plains, with many rivers, streams, lagoons, ponds and lakes with large water reserves, favorable for aquaculture.
In particular, Tam Dao district and Song Lo district have many large streams and lakes, abundant and clean water sources; the climate is cool all year round, suitable for the growth and reproduction of some cold-water fish species, especially sturgeon.
In addition, Vinh Phuc is a locality with strong industrial development, many famous tourist areas, attracting a large number of tourists every year to visit and relax, and is a very good market for high-value seafood products such as sturgeon...
Taking advantage of these favorable conditions, recently, a number of households in Tam Dao and Song Lo districts have invested in building and developing sturgeon farming models, initially bringing positive results.
According to statistics, the whole province currently has 4 facilities investing in sturgeon farming, including 2 facilities in Dao Tru commune, 1 facility in Minh Quang commune, Tam Dao district and 1 facility in Dong Que commune, Song Lo district.
The main farming objects are Siberian sturgeon and Russian sturgeon; fingerlings are imported from Sa Pa (Lao Cai) and Lam Dong for farming, the annual commercial fish output is about 30 tons.
Through the breeding process, the facilities said that sturgeon is suitable for the natural conditions in the province; the fish grow well, the survival rate is high, on average 75-80%, after 1-2 years of stocking, it can be harvested, the fish reach a weight of 2-3 kg/fish, the fish can be sold at a good price, with a good profit margin (selling price 200,000 -250,000 VND/kg, profit accounts for 30-50% of the selling price).
According to engineer Vu Duy Cuong, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the potential for sturgeon farming in the province is huge. However, in order for the sturgeon farming model to develop sustainably and bring high economic efficiency, the authorities need to pay attention, research, and synchronously implement many solutions.
In particular, focus on developing specific plans and schemes for the development of sturgeon farming; review and include areas with potential and advantages for sturgeon farming in local land use planning. In addition to sturgeon farming around streams, it is possible to raise sturgeon in large reservoirs such as Vinh Thanh, Xa Huong, etc.
Develop mechanisms and policies to support the development of sturgeon farming to exploit the potential and promote the strengths of each locality and region, such as investing in infrastructure, purchasing equipment, supporting food and seed costs for sturgeon farmers, etc. There are appropriate mechanisms and policies to mobilize large enterprises to participate in sturgeon production and trading.
Encourage sturgeon farming facilities to link up, establish cooperatives, cooperative groups... to share and help each other; form a value chain from production to processing and consumption.
Strengthening market promotion, introducing Vinh Phuc sturgeon products through forms such as exhibitions, fairs, propaganda, advertising... ensuring stable output for products; building brands, creating differences compared to similar products on the market.
Along with that, promote cooperation in research, transfer and application of science and technology in production and farming of sturgeon; research and select sturgeon species suitable for the climate and hydrological conditions of the province.
Applying scientific and technical advances to production such as using greenhouse farming processes, circulating farming, equipping water filtration systems, aerators, temperature control systems... to improve productivity, output, quality and reduce production costs; creating products with high added value such as caviar, smoked sturgeon...
