Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (from Duc Tho, Ha Tinh) has tried his hand at raising eels without mud and has initially achieved quite good economic results, opening up a development direction for farmers in the area.
Farmer Nguyen Van Tuan's mudless eel farming model has yielded considerable economic benefits.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (born in 1987, residing in Yen Ho commune) is the first person to raise eels without mud in Duc Tho district. Having tried many professions such as cricket farming, mechanical processing, and fish farming, he believes that raising eels without mud is now bringing a considerable income to his family. To develop this model, Mr. Tuan invested over 200 million VND in building breeding tanks, purchasing eel fry, feed, etc.
Mr. Tuan said: "Raising eels is not as difficult as raising other types of aquatic products, because eels have very good resistance, are less susceptible to disease, and have a favorable market."
Starting with 2,000 eel fry, Mr. Tuan now has 7 tanks for raising eels for meat, with 14,000 eels; and 1 tank for breeding eel fry, with over 10,000 eels. The time from stocking to harvesting is 10-12 months. With this long rearing period, the eels yield high productivity and have delicious meat quality. Mr. Tuan only sells the eels when they reach a weight of 3 to 4 eels per kilogram.
After 10 months, each eel weighs between 250-300g.
Eel juveniles typically feed on tubifex worms, and upon reaching maturity, they are fed a powdered feed made from fish scraps. Farmed eels have good resistance to disease, are less prone to illness, and have a favorable market... however, clean water is a crucial factor.
Currently, Mr. Tuan sells adult eels to traders and restaurant owners at 160,000 VND/kg; eel fry at 4,500 VND/each. After 3 years of developing the model, Mr. Tuan has sold approximately 1 ton of adult eels and 5,500 eel fry, earning a profit of nearly 185 million VND. Mr. Tuan's mudless eel farming model is being visited and studied by many farmers in and outside the locality.
Mr. Tuan only sells the eels after they have been raised for 10-12 months.
Mr. Dao Quang Binh, Chairman of the Yen Ho Commune Farmers' Association, said: "After three years of accompanying and monitoring the mudless eel farming model of member Nguyen Van Tuan, we have found that this model brings quite good economic results. In particular, the market for eels is stable, so the Commune Farmers' Association has promoted and encouraged members to develop it. Currently, there are three more models in the commune."
