Unforgettable days

We met wounded soldier Vu Van Quang (67 years old) on a historic day in April. Mr. Quang, a small man, dressed simply, told us unforgettable memories of the years he fought with his comrades, holding guns and making achievements.

In October 1974, at the call of the Southern battlefield, young Vu Van Quang enlisted in the army at the age of 17. After training, his unit was added to the 18th Regiment, 325th Division of the 2nd Corps (also known as the Huong Giang Corps), the first main infantry division from the North to enter the South.

Mr. Quang participated in the Hue - Da Nang Campaign, the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign. He recalled that at 11:30 on April 30, 1975, Tank 390 of the 203rd Tank Brigade crashed through the main gate of the Independence Palace. Immediately after that, his unit of the 2nd Corps took over the palace. With the motto "lightning speed, boldness, surprise, sure victory", at this time, facing the overwhelming strength of the liberation army, the enemy completely disintegrated like "a broken beehive".

The image he still remembers clearly when he entered to liberate Saigon was that wherever our army went, people on both sides of the road warmly welcomed them. In the evening, people brought rice, food, and fruit to give as gifts and held a cultural festival with the soldiers.

"When I heard the news of Saigon's complete liberation, I was in the clouds, extremely happy. After that, I couldn't sleep for several nights because of the overwhelming emotions...", Mr. Quang confided.

After the country was liberated, Mr. Quang continued to fight in the southwestern border, volunteering to help Cambodia. During a battle against the enemy, Mr. Quang was shot in the face. In March 1981, he was discharged from the army and returned to his hometown with a disability rate of 25%.

Carrying many wounds on his body, when he returned from the battlefield, his health was not good. 2 of his 4 children were victims of Agent Orange, of which 1 died, the youngest daughter is mentally disabled.

With the qualities of a soldier of Uncle Ho, Mr. Quang has risen up, actively participated in building his homeland, and taken the lead in all local movements.

As Chairman of the Association of Agent Orange/Dioxin Victims, he actively mobilized members to build new rural areas, maintain security and order, protect the environment, and develop the economy together.

Mr. Quang also called on members to contribute, mobilized people and benefactors to build the main village road and village gate; repaired and renovated some degraded temples in the commune with a sum of billions of dong. He also actively researched, learned, and restored the inscriptions of the temples.

The 7-meter wide, straight concrete road of the new rural village is decorated with rows of green trees on both sides of the road, partly thanks to Mr. Quang's efforts to build, care for and clean the road.

Mr. Quang regularly cares for Agent Orange victims in the locality; advises the Party Committee, government and coordinates with organizations to carry out humanitarian and charitable work. Every year, on the occasion of Tet, Mr. Quang connects to give 2-3 gifts to members' families in difficult circumstances, each gift worth 300,000 - 500,000 VND.

With the above contributions, in 2024, Mr. Quang was awarded a certificate of merit by the Chairman of Tu Ky District People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in the emulation movement with the model of "skillful mass mobilization". For many consecutive years, Mr. Quang and the collective of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin of the commune have been awarded certificates of merit at all levels for excellently completing their tasks.

Mr. Pham Van An, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Ky commune, said: "Mr. Quang always puts the collective's common interests first, is dedicated and devoted to his work. His example of "skillful mass mobilization" deserves to be recognized, praised and spread."
