Unforgettable days

We met war veteran Vu Van Quang (67 years old) on a historic day in April. Mr. Quang, a small man dressed simply, recounted his unforgettable memories of the years he spent fighting alongside his comrades, achieving great victories.

In October 1974, answering the call of the Southern battlefield, young Vu Van Quang enlisted in the army at the age of 17. After training, his unit was assigned to the 18th Regiment, 325th Division, 2nd Corps (also known as the Huong Giang Army Corps), the first main infantry division from the North to advance into the South.

Mr. Quang participated in the Hue-Da Nang Campaign and the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign. He recalled that at 11:30 AM on April 30, 1975, Tank 390 of the 203rd Tank Brigade rammed through the main gate of the Independence Palace. Immediately afterward, his unit, belonging to the 2nd Army Corps, took over the palace. With the motto "swift, bold, unexpected, and certain to win," faced with the overwhelming strength of the liberation army, the enemy completely disintegrated like "a swarm of bees."

The image he still vividly remembers from the liberation of Saigon is that wherever our troops went, they were warmly welcomed by the people on both sides of the road. In the evenings, people brought rice, food, and fruit as gifts and held cultural and artistic celebrations with the soldiers.

"When I heard the news that Saigon had been completely liberated, I felt like I was on cloud nine, overjoyed beyond measure. After that, I couldn't sleep for several nights because I was overwhelmed with so many emotions...", Mr. Quang confided.

After the country was liberated, Mr. Quang continued to fight on the southwestern border, volunteering to assist Cambodia. In a battle against an enemy raid, Mr. Quang was shot in the face. In March 1981, he was discharged from the army and returned to his hometown with a 25% disability rating.

Bearing numerous wounds on his body, his health was not good upon returning from the battlefield. Two of his four children were victims of Agent Orange, one of whom has passed away, and his youngest daughter suffers from intellectual disability.

Shining brightly with the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers.

With the qualities of a soldier of Uncle Ho's army, Mr. Quang rose to prominence, actively participating in building his homeland and leading all local movements.

As the Chairman of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in the commune, he actively mobilized members to build new rural areas, maintain security and order, protect the environment, and develop the economy together.

Mr. Quang also took the initiative to call on members to contribute, mobilizing people and philanthropists to build the main village road and village gate; and to repair and renovate some dilapidated temples in the commune with billions of dong. He also actively researched, studied, and restored the inscriptions of the temples.

The newly constructed, 7-meter-wide, straight concrete road in the village, adorned with lush green trees on both sides, owes part of its construction, maintenance, and cleaning to Mr. Quang's efforts.

Mr. Quang regularly cares for and supports victims of Agent Orange in the locality; he advises the Party Committee and the government, and coordinates with various organizations to carry out humanitarian and charitable work. Every year, during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year), Mr. Quang connects with and donates 2-3 gift packages to families of members in difficult circumstances, each package worth 300,000-500,000 VND.

The main road in Ha Hai village has been upgraded and extensively renovated, thanks in part to the efforts and coordination of Mr. Vu Van Quang.

For these contributions, in 2024, Mr. Quang was awarded a certificate of commendation by the Chairman of the People's Committee of Tu Ky District for his outstanding achievements in the emulation movement with the "skillful mass mobilization" model. For many years, Mr. Quang and the collective of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in the commune have received certificates of merit and commendations from various levels for excellently fulfilling their duties.

Mr. Pham Van An, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Ky commune, said: "Mr. Quang always puts the common good of the collective first, and is dedicated and wholeheartedly committed to his work. His exemplary 'skillful people mobilization' deserves to be recognized, praised, and widely disseminated."
