Earlier this week, the Pheu Thai Party and 10 other parties (including several pro-military parties) announced the formation of a coalition. The 11-party alliance currently controls 314 seats in the Thai House of Representatives and Mr. Srettha has been nominated as the coalition's prime minister candidate.
The return of Thailand's most prominent politician Thaksin and Mr Srettha's smooth rise to the top job will add to speculation that Mr Thaksin may have struck a deal with the pro-military camp to allow him to return safely.
Today's events are the latest twist in a nearly two-decade power struggle between Pheu Thai, which has won five elections, and a group of conservatives, generals and wealthy families that have long wielded influence over Thai politics and the economy .
Mr Srettha has said his priorities are to stimulate the economy and narrow the gap between rich and poor.
