Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a letter to his friend Sarah Lande in the US, saying that the achievements in bilateral relations were mainly due to the efforts of the people.
"China is the world's largest developing country and the US is the world's largest developed country. The future and destiny of the planet require a more stable and better China-US relationship," Xinhua said on January 10, citing a letter sent by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Sarah Lande, who lives in Iowa, US. The news agency said Xi responded to Lande's letter but did not mention the content of the letter she sent.
Xi Jinping said that the achievements in China-US relations are mainly due to the joint efforts of the people of both countries. He affirmed that China is "willing to cooperate with the US to promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of bilateral relations."

Xi Jinping met Lande and her close-knit group of Iowa residents in 1985, when he was there as head of a food processing delegation from China's Hebei province.
Xi, then 31, was warmly welcomed for two weeks by a group of Iowans who had maintained good relations with the Chinese president for decades and were known as his “old friends” in America. He met Lande again in her hometown of Muscatine in 2012.
In China, the term "old friend" expresses affection for the other person, and also shows familiarity and trust.
In a letter to Lande in 2022, Xi urged her and her group of “old friends” in Iowa to continue to sow the seeds of and contribute to the friendship between the Chinese and American people. During his visit to the United States last November, the Chinese president also invited the group, including Lande, to a party in San Francisco that he hosted.
Beijing and Washington have been at loggerheads over a number of issues, including trade, the origins of Covid-19, and the situation in Hong Kong and Taiwan. However, relations between the two countries are said to be on the thaw path after Xi Jinping’s visit to the US last year. However, observers warn that Sino-US relations could continue to face many storms in 2024, the year the US holds its presidential election.
