Clean durian products

In February 2023, Phu Duc durian was granted a growing area code for 20 hectares, marking a major turning point when the product was officially exported to the Chinese market at a high price. This is the result of the efforts of the cooperative members to convert to organic production. Not only focusing on building growing area codes and building clean durian products, but also meeting OCOP standards is an important criterion that Phu Duc Agricultural Cooperative is aiming for.

According to data from the cooperative, there are currently more than 40 hectares of organic durian with 70 households registering to meet the 3-star OCOP standard. The cooperative is mobilizing 20 more households to join, adding an area of about 15 hectares. After the product is certified as OCOP, Phu Duc durian will not only expand its export to China but also access other consumption channels such as large fairs, supermarkets, tourist areas, attracting foreign visitors.

To help people feel secure in producing and developing high-quality organic durian, the Cooperative has carried out many propaganda and mobilization activities. Since 2024, more than 10 training courses on durian growing techniques have been organized with the participation of more than 60 members. Through training, people not only grasp organic farming techniques but also raise awareness of economic and environmental benefits. Growing organic durian helps increase product value, protect the environment and minimize the impact of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Phu Duc Agricultural Cooperative Cao Van Binh said: “We coordinate with specialized agencies to inspect and supervise the production process, ensuring that the output products meet organic standards. The cooperative has also developed a set of specific criteria for members to implement, from seed selection, care to harvesting and preservation. In addition, we actively connect with businesses, supermarkets and e-commerce platforms to expand product output. Our goal is not only to increase income for people but also to build a strong and prestigious Phu Duc durian brand in domestic and foreign markets.”

Mr. Nguyen Van Dat, 32 years old, Phu Long hamlet, Phu Duc commune, is one of the pioneer households in growing organic durian in the locality, sharing: “At first, I was also hesitant because organic growing requires changing traditional methods, requiring a lot of care. But thanks to participating in training courses and being guided by the cooperative, I have converted more than 1 hectare of land to organic growing. Now, my durian garden is growing very well, with few pests and diseases, saving on fertilizer and pesticide costs, and especially being pre-ordered by traders at a higher price than the market. My family is very happy because my income is increasingly stable.”

Expanding consumer market

Mr. Nguyen Van Dat was excited to learn that Phu Duc durian is completing its profile to become a 3-star OCOP product. “My fellow villagers and I are very proud. If we are recognized as a 3-star OCOP, the Phu Duc durian brand will be elevated, creating favorable conditions for market expansion, especially export. This is a great motivation for us to continue to maintain and develop a sustainable organic growing model,” Mr. Nguyen Van Dat added.

The “One Commune One Product” (OCOP) program has brought positive effects to Ben Tre province, changing farmers’ production practices, enhancing the value and brand of typical products. Phu Duc durian is a typical example, not only improving quality but also expanding the consumption market, creating a strong boost for the local agricultural sector.

In the coming time, Phu Duc Agricultural Cooperative will closely coordinate with the Commune Farmers' Association to continue to guide and support entities in developing organic durian products, organizing conferences and seminars to exchange experiences associated with building raw material areas. At the same time, promoting trade, promoting products and building private brands and trademarks.

Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Phu Duc Commune, Pham Hong Quang, said: This is a strategic direction to increase the value of durian trees, while creating conditions for farmers to develop a sustainable economy. The Farmers’ Association of the commune will continue to accompany the cooperative in mobilizing members to apply organic production processes, ensuring product quality and food safety.

With the available advantages, along with the consensus from the government and people, Phu Duc commune can completely realize the goal of bringing durian to meet 3-star OCOP standards, creating momentum for sustainable and stable development, contributing to increasing farmers' income and affirming the position of Phu Duc durian products in the market.

“The Commune Farmers’ Association will actively support the necessary procedures so that Phu Duc durian products can soon be recognized as 3-star OCOP, and move towards upgrading the star rating in the following years. When there is a clear brand and a stable market, people will feel secure in investing long-term, thereby contributing to promoting the development of the local rural economy.”
