On the afternoon of April 8th, the Executive Committee of the Hanoi City Party Committee held a conference to announce the Politburo 's decision on personnel matters.
Attending and directing the conference were Mr. Tran Cam Tu, Member of the Political Bureau and Standing Secretary of the Central Committee; Mr. Nguyen Duy Ngoc, Member of the Political Bureau, Secretary of the Central Committee and Head of the Central Organization Department; Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tra, Secretary of the Central Committee and Deputy Prime Minister; along with representatives of the Hanoi City leadership, and leaders of departments, agencies, communes, and wards of the city.
The Politburo decided that Mr. Tran Duc Thang - Member of the Politburo, Secretary of the Party Committee, Minister of Agriculture and Environment for the 2021-2026 term - will cease his participation in the Government Party Committee for the 2020-2025 term; and will be assigned and appointed to participate in the Executive Committee and Standing Committee of the Hanoi City Party Committee and hold the position of Secretary of the Hanoi City Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term.
Mr. Tran Duc Thang (born in 1973; hometown: Phu Tho); holds a PhD in economics; is a member of the Central Committee of the Party in the 13th and 14th terms; Minister of Agriculture and Environment; and a member of the Politburo in the 14th term.
Regarding his career, from October 2009 to October 2018, Mr. Thang successively held the positions of Deputy Director of the Department of Public Assets Management; Deputy Chief of the Office of the Ministry of Finance; and Director of the Department of Public Assets Management, Ministry of Finance.
From October 2018 to January 2021, he served as a member of the Central Inspection Committee and then as Deputy Chairman of the Central Inspection Committee of the 12th Party Congress.
On January 30, 2021, Mr. Thang was elected as a member of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
In October 2022, the Politburo transferred and appointed Mr. Tran Duc Thang as Secretary of the Hai Duong Provincial Party Committee.
On July 1, 2025, the Prime Minister transferred and appointed Mr. Tran Duc Thang to the position of Permanent Deputy Inspector General of the Government Inspectorate. Subsequently, he was appointed to the position of Secretary of the Party Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and Acting Minister of Agriculture and Environment.
On October 25, 2025, he assumed the position of Minister of Agriculture and Environment.
On January 22, 2026, at the 14th National Congress of the Party, Mr. Thang was elected a member of the 14th Central Committee. On January 23, 2026, at the first meeting of the 14th Central Committee, Mr. Thang was elected to the Politburo.
In March 2026, Mr. Thang was elected as a member of the 16th National Assembly, for the term 2026-2031.
