Republicans elect John Thune as Senate majority leader

Republican senators in the US Senate have elected Senator John Thune of South Dakota as the next Senate majority leader. John Thune will replace veteran leader Mitch McConnell, 82, who is stepping down after a record 18-year tenure. John Thune, 63, defeated Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida in two rounds of voting. "I am deeply honored to have the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 119th Congress and I am extremely proud of the work we have done to secure the majority," Thune said on November 13. Thune ran for majority leader in the Senate on a platform of implementing President-elect Donald Trump's agenda, although the two men have sometimes disagreed. Mr Thune has rejected Mr Trump's false claims that the 2020 election was "stolen".

Trump chooses attorney general

President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday named Republican congressman Matt Gaetz as his nominee for attorney general. "Matt will end the armed government, secure our borders, dismantle criminal organizations, and restore the broken faith and trust of the American people in the Department of Justice ," Trump said. Trump's pick will have to be confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate. The selection of a 42-year-old congressman who has never worked at the Justice Department or as a prosecutor at any level of government is the latest in a wave of Trump's nominations of candidates with little experience. Gaetz played a key role in ousting former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in 2023, setting off weeks of turmoil at the agency. Gaetz's nomination to be attorney general was immediately met with skepticism by some Republican senators.

Mr. Trump officially chooses Secretary of State

US President-elect Donald Trump has formally nominated Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a senior member of both the foreign relations and intelligence committees and a former political rival, to be secretary of state. "He will be a fierce advocate for America, a true friend to our allies and a fearless fighter who will never back down from an adversary," Trump said in a statement. The pick could come as a relief to US partners worried that the Trump administration could withdraw from the global network of alliances, including NATO. This concern stems from Trump's "America First" approach to foreign affairs. Rumors of Rubio's selection have drawn criticism from some Republicans, who say Rubio's foreign policy views are too traditional and internationalist. Rubio, 53, is known as a China hawk. He has previously advocated a more assertive US foreign policy toward its geopolitical rivals, although his views have recently come closer to Trump's "America First" view of foreign policy.

Trump picks director of national intelligence

US President-elect Donald Trump on November 13 picked Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and outspoken critic of the Biden administration's foreign policy, to be director of national intelligence. Gabbard, 43, who will leave the Democratic Party in 2022, will replace her predecessor Avril Haines after Trump begins his second term in January. Gabbard may face some opposition for her past criticism of the current administration's support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia. She also spoke out against military intervention in the Syrian civil war under former President Barack Obama.

Hezbollah attacks Israeli military headquarters for first time

Hezbollah announced that it had used drones for the first time to attack the headquarters of the Israeli army's General Staff in Tel Aviv on November 13. According to the statement, the movement's fighters "for the first time... used a group of suicide drones to attack the Hakirya base, which houses the Ministry of War (i.e. the Israeli Ministry of Defense ) and the General Staff and the command post of the air force." In addition, Hezbollah also carried out another drone attack on the Amos logistics base of the Israeli army in the city of Afula, about 55km from the border with Lebanon. On the same day, the Israeli army (IDF) confirmed that it had airstrikes on many weapons depots and Hezbollah headquarters located in residential areas in the Lebanese capital Beirut. Also on November 13, Israel's new Defense Minister, Israel Katz, declared that he would not approve of any ceasefire agreement in Lebanon unless there was a provision ensuring the disarmed Hezbollah movement retreated north of Lebanon's Litani River or creating conditions for residents of northern Israel to return home.
