(CLO) US President Donald Trump recently announced that he may consider rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO), just days after deciding to withdraw the US from the organization.

Speaking on January 25, Mr. Trump said: "Maybe we will consider going back to WHO, I don't know. Maybe we will. But they need to reform this organization."

According to the current plan, the US will officially leave the WHO on January 22, 2026, after Mr. Trump signed an executive order to withdraw from the organization on the first day of his second term in office.

The United States is the largest financial contributor to the WHO, accounting for about 18% of the organization's total budget. The WHO's latest budget for 2024-2025 is estimated at $6.8 billion. Mr. Trump has expressed displeasure that the United States contributes more than China, despite China having a significantly larger population.

The withdrawal of the US from the WHO was made by Mr. Trump in his previous term (2017-2021), when he accused the organization of being biased towards China and ineffective in handling the COVID-19 pandemic. He once declared that the WHO failed to warn early about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, causing serious consequences globally.

However, many health experts and international leaders say that withdrawing the US from WHO could weaken disease prevention efforts and reduce America's leadership role in global health issues.

After the US announced its withdrawal from the WHO, many countries expressed concern about the financial void Washington would leave. The European Union (EU) and China have pledged to increase financial support to fill the gap. However, analysts say the US absence could make it difficult for the WHO to carry out important global health programs.
