Trump compares himself to Nelson Mandela, drawing immediate criticism from President Biden

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/04/2024

Mr Trump, 78, has been charged in four separate criminal cases, all of which could result in a prison sentence for the 45th US president. One of the four cases involves allegations that he paid a porn star to “silence” her before the presidential election, which he won in 2016.

The trial is scheduled to begin on April 15, and Judge Juan Mercan has imposed a partial speech ban on Mr Trump, who has frequently attacked the judge on social media.

In a post on his social network Truth Social on April 6, Mr. Trump accused Judge Mercan of violating his right to freedom of speech and expression under the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

"If this partisan wants to put me in a 'lockdown' to tell the TRUTH openly and obviously, I will gladly become a modern-day Nelson Mandela - it would be my GREATEST HONOR," Trump wrote.

Former US President Donald Trump

Nelson Mandela is known worldwide as a hero in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison before being released and eventually serving as president of South Africa. He died in 2013.

Mr Trump, who is running to return to the White House, has previously compared himself to Mr Mandela during a 2023 campaign rally, and has also likened himself to Jesus.

The campaign team of President Biden, Mr. Trump's successor in the White House, quickly spoke out after the former president's post.

“Imagine being so self-centered that you compare yourself to Jesus and Nelson Mandela in just over a week: That’s your Donald Trump!” the Biden campaign said in a statement on April 6.

Mr Biden and Mr Trump are now almost certain to face off again in the US presidential election in November, a repeat of the 2020 scenario.
