According to the newspaper, Zelensky's letter read: "When it comes to ballistic missile defense, we rely almost entirely on the United States. The current delivery rate under the PURL program no longer meets the reality of the threat we face. I request your support in protecting Ukrainian airspace from Russian missiles."
In his message, Zelensky requested the transfer of PAC-3 missiles to Kyiv to equip its Patriot system.
According to the newspaper, Ukraine's ambassador to the US, Olga Stefanishyna, submitted this letter to Congress .
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, commenting on Moscow's threats to escalate attacks on Kyiv in response to the Starobelsk attack and turn them into systematic attacks, made no mention of providing anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine and did not condemn Russia's actions.
In other news, the British magazine The Economist reported that Zelensky has instructed his Cabinet to prepare for a war lasting another two to three years.
"There is no compelling reason to suggest that Ukraine cannot continue such a long struggle. The country will survive, albeit with the burden of militarism and corruption within the military," the article commented, but also noted that some Ukrainians view the situation differently.
The Economist wrote that the war has severely weakened Ukraine's rear: critical infrastructure is deteriorating, and its air defenses are dangerously weakened.
The Ukrainian President's office has commented on the British journalists' report. Presidential advisor Dmitry Litvin called it a fabrication.
"This is just another old, worn-out hoax. Perhaps people need to use it as a means to convey other messages about the dire situation. But at the meeting with the factions, the president said we need to focus on the six months until November; we have that deadline," Litvin said.
