The parent company of chatbot app ChatGPT is accused of illicit collecting and using personal data of hundreds of millions of people from the internet without consent, notice or compensation.
OpenAI is facing a class action lawsuit over allegations that it stole and illicitly used large amounts of internet user data to train its artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
According to CNN (USA), in a lawsuit filed in a California federal court on June 28, the Microsoft-backed startup was accused of secretly collecting “huge amounts of personal data from the internet”.
“This data, which includes essentially every piece of information available online, was collected by OpenAI without consent, notice, or compensation,” the 160-page lawsuit states.
According to the lawsuit, the unauthorized data collection occurred on an “unprecedented” scale.
In a statement to CNN, Timothy K. Giordano, a partner at the law firm Clarkson behind the lawsuit, said: By illicit collecting and using the personal data of millions of people to develop “unstable, untested” technology, OpenAI has put people at unforeseeable risk, and this is “unacceptable.”
The accusation also alleges that OpenAI's products “used stolen personal information, including personally identifiable information,” from hundreds of millions of internet users, including children of all ages, without the consent of the data subjects.
The lawsuit seeks a court order temporarily freezing the commercialization of OpenAI's products and forcing the company to pay “data dividends” as financial compensation to owners of data that OpenAI has used to develop and train its AI tools.
Neither OpenAI nor its major investor, Microsoft, which is also a defendant in the lawsuit, have commented on the allegations.
OpenAI officially launched the AI chatbot ChatGPT late last year. Immediately after its launch, this tool immediately created a fever on a global scale thanks to its ability to give natural, human-like written responses based on user prompts.
The success of ChatGPT has spurred the formation of an AI race in the world technology village, as a series of giants such as Google, Microsoft, Alibaba, Meta... as well as many startups are racing to develop and deploy AI tools into as many products as possible.
