Young faces in the medical field: dedicated, committed, and devoted.
Having achieved the title of Associate Professor at the young age of 37, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hau is one of the outstanding figures of the talented young generation of doctors in the medical field. However, when we met him in person, our first impression of him was his approachable, simple yet incredibly enthusiastic demeanor. In his eyes, one could easily sense a passionate dedication to his profession and a deep concern for the mission of saving lives.
Born into a studious family in Phuong Hoang commune, Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province, Nguyen Xuan Hau was early captivated by the image of doctors and nurses tirelessly working day and night to treat patients. From a young age, Hau vowed that one day he too would stand among the ranks of medical professionals, bringing life to those battling illness.

That dream became the driving force behind his relentless efforts in his studies. In 2010, Nguyen Xuan Hau graduated with honors in General Medicine from Hanoi Medical University. But for him, this was not the end. He continued to pass the entrance exam and enrolled in a residency program specializing in Oncology, determined to delve deeper into the research and treatment of one of the most deadly diseases.
"I've always believed that to give cancer patients hope, it requires not only a compassionate heart but also a solid scientific foundation. That's why I decided to pursue this specialized field," he shared.
After many years of diligent study and research, in 2019, Nguyen Xuan Hau successfully defended his doctoral thesis in medicine, affirming his position in the field of oncology. Not stopping there, he was retained as a lecturer in the Department of Oncology at Hanoi Medical University, and also directly treated patients at the Oncology and Palliative Care Department, Hanoi Medical University Hospital.
Years of teaching and directly treating patients helped him better understand the suffering of those battling this terrible disease. "Every time I see a patient leave the hospital with a smile, I know I've chosen the right path," he said.
Continuous learning – Creating new advancements in medicine.
Having dedicated over a decade to the medical field, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hau has continuously strived to learn, research, and develop advanced treatment techniques. As a talented student under the guidance of Professor Dr. Le Van Quang – Head of the Oncology Department at Hanoi Medical University, Director of K Hospital, and Director of the Oncology Center at Hanoi Medical University Hospital – he has successfully applied endoscopic thyroidectomy via the oral route. He, along with Professor Dr. Le Van Quang and his team, has trained and transferred this technique to doctors nationwide. This represents a significant advancement in the treatment of thyroid diseases, not only domestically but also globally, resulting in minimal scarring and rapid recovery for patients.

“When we first performed this technique, my colleagues and I faced countless difficulties. Due to our lack of practical experience, the surgery lasted more than four hours, requiring intense concentration from the entire team. I knew that the success of the surgery would not only bring hope to the patient but also open up a new direction in treatment,” shared Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hau.
Not stopping there, he continued to learn advanced techniques from countries like South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand to further refine his skills. To date, his team has been able to shorten the time for endoscopic thyroidectomy via the oral route to less than an hour.
Not only is Nguyen Xuan Hau a skilled doctor, but he is also a dedicated researcher. He has supervised numerous master's and doctoral theses and published hundreds of scientific articles in international journals. Simultaneously, together with his mentor, Professor Le Van Quang, he has published several valuable monographs such as "Head and Neck Cancer" (2020), "Thyroid Cancer" (2021), "Thyroid Surgery Atlas" (2021), and "Chemotherapy for Cancer" (2021), making significant contributions to the training of oncologists in Vietnam.
For him, becoming an Associate Professor is not just a title, but also a great responsibility. “Being recognized as an Associate Professor is an honor, but I know that the road ahead will be full of challenges. I have a responsibility not only to my patients but also to the younger generations of doctors I am teaching. If I can inspire them and help them find their passion for the profession, that would be true success. I always tell my students that a good doctor is not only someone with solid expertise, but also someone with a heart for their patients. Medicine is not just a science, but also the art of healing,” the doctor confided.

I also hope that the Vietnamese healthcare system will receive increasing investment to update modern equipment such as robotic surgery and proton therapy in cancer treatment,” he said.
