A facility producing and selling counterfeit coffee by adding additives and chemicals of unknown origin in Pleiku City has just been shut down by the Gia Lai Provincial Police.
On January 26th, the Gia Lai Provincial Police announced that the Criminal Investigation Agency had initiated a case and indicted Nguyen Hoang Vu (32 years old), residing in Pleiku City, for investigation into the production and sale of... Fake coffee.
Vu has been charged and is under investigation for the crime of "producing and trading counterfeit food products".
Previously, the Police Department criminal investigation Regarding corruption, economic issues , and environmental problems, the Gia Lai Provincial Police organized simultaneous inspections of numerous coffee production sites in Pleiku City.
During an inspection, authorities discovered three establishments producing and selling "Uyên" brand powdered coffee, with their main address at Alley 3 Nguyen Thiep, Pleiku City, were infusing and mixing coffee with additives and chemicals of unknown origin before selling it on the market.
The police seized over 800kg of packaged coffee at the facility and some coffee intended for distribution to grocery stores in Duc Co, Chu Prong, Krong Pa districts, Pleiku City (Gia Lai province) and Dak Ha district (Kon Tum province).
In addition, authorities seized 426kg of coffee that had been mixed with additives and chemicals but had not yet been packaged.
After conducting an expert assessment, investigators determined that 785 kg of the seized coffee was counterfeit. According to the police, a large quantity of counterfeit "Uyen" brand coffee had already been sold on the market before being discovered.
The Gia Lai Provincial Police Investigation Agency is currently expanding its investigation into the case.
