Must change the way journalism is trained

Associate Professor, Dr. Duong Xuan Son - Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Hanoi National University) said: "Currently, every year, three journalism bachelor training institutions nationwide graduate nearly 400 students, other training institutions have about 100 graduates. It is worth noting that the rate of journalism graduates who can find jobs is still low (about 15%), many students have to change careers."

Why? Dr. Son said that in recent years, the team of research and teaching staff at training institutions has been low in quantity and quality. At some press agencies, there are many skilled journalists who have been trained abroad and have practical experience, but they are busy with their work, and at the same time, due to the mechanism not being strong enough, they have not been attracted to training work.

According to the assessment of journalist Le Quoc Minh - Editorial Board of Foreign News, Vietnam News Agency, journalism students currently do not have many opportunities to practice properly. Internship time at newsrooms, if any, is only a mandatory step for proper procedures before graduation. Some students who take the initiative to practice encounter difficulties because they are not on the payroll of any newspaper, so they cannot approach the necessary subjects or cannot find valuable information due to few relationships.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Thai - Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi ) recounted: "As someone who has taught journalism students since the first year and also personally led third-year students on field trips, I have just realized one thing: my journalism students are so thirsty for journalism practice!". Dr. Thai has drawn the conclusion: Journalism students must be trained in practice. To enhance students' practical ability, journalist Le Quoc Minh said: Journalism faculties need to create a close connection channel with press agencies to send reporters to practice right from the first years of study. If only the issue of supporting students is raised, many newspapers will not be enthusiastic, but if they see this as a source of quality reporters, they may create conditions to help.

Dr. Duong Xuan Son also proposed: there should be coordination between schools and press agencies to mobilize resources for teaching and learning; improve quality as well as link between training and recruitment, between the need to receive and provide human resources...
