Therefore, exercising from the age of 50 can "reverse" years of inactivity.
As the world 's aging population grows and dementia, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis reach high levels, people of all ages want not only to live long but also to live healthy lives.
The physical condition of someone who starts exercising at age 50 is almost the same as someone who has been exercising regularly since before age 50.
New research brings good news for people who start exercising at age 50, especially women.
A study led by scientists at the University of Sydney (Australia), which tracked more than 11,000 people, mostly women, found that age 50 is a crucial time to start exercising, according to the scientific journal Science Alert.
The results found that people who consistently exercised at the recommended level (at least 150 minutes per week) for 15 years were in better physical condition than those who never or rarely exercised at the recommended level.
In particular, even those who hadn't exercised regularly before reaped the benefits of the new habit.
Notably, the final results showed that the physical fitness of those who started exercising at age 50 was nearly identical to that of those who regularly exercised before age 50, scoring 3 points higher than those who never or rarely exercised enough to meet the recommended level.
The research team stated: "Our findings suggest that to maintain a good quality of life and physical fitness into age 70, a good way to 'make up' for a lack of exercise in youth is to start exercising actively from age 50."
Interestingly, the results also found that people who started exercising regularly in their 60s did not reap the same benefits as those who started exercising in their 50s.
The authors suggest that the reason may be the lack of accumulated physical activity to provide clear health benefits by age 70.
The researchers concluded: Combined with existing evidence, this study once again demonstrates the benefits of exercise in middle age.
