In his post-match press conference, Luis Enrique reacted angrily to the accusations: "I tried to stop my players from fighting. It was an avoidable situation, I'm sure. There was a lot of pushing and shoving."
He stressed that his actions were only intended to control the situation, not to incite violence: “My only intention was to stop the players from fighting. It was very tense, there was a lot of pushing and shoving. I have nothing more to say. I don't care if people like me or not.”
Enrique added that Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was also caught up in the chaos: “I saw Maresca being pushed and then he pushed someone else! It was clear that our (the coaches) intention was just to stop the players!”
In the early morning of July 14, Chelsea defeated PSG 3-0 to win the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™. After the final whistle blew at MetLife Stadium, players from both sides exchanged words. While Andrey Santos argued with Achraf Hakimi, Joao Pedro rushed to intervene but was unexpectedly hit by coach Luis Enrique.
The former Brighton player fell to the ground after being hit by the PSG head coach. Speaking about the incident, Joao Pedro also implied that Enrique was a bad loser: "They (PSG) are bad losers, I came to protect my teammate and then got pushed to the ground."
Former La Liga referee Iturralde Gonzalez believes coach Enrique could be suspended by FIFA for violent conduct, which could mean he will miss PSG's opening match of the new season against Tottenham in the European Super Cup on August 13.
