Italy coach's reaction after 2026 World Cup play-off draw

(Dan Tri) - Speaking to the press, Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso was satisfied with the draw against Northern Ireland in the 2026 World Cup play-off round. However, he still spoke about his opponent with a certain amount of caution.

According to the draw for the 2026 World Cup play-offs in Europe, Italy are in Group A. In the semi-finals, the Azzurri will face Northern Ireland. They will then meet the winner of the Wales-Bosnia match in the final to qualify for the tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Commenting on his opponent Northern Ireland, Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso expressed satisfaction, saying that this was a match-worthy opponent. However, the coach was also very cautious when assessing Northern Ireland's strength.

Coach Gattuso said: “Northern Ireland is an opponent within our reach. This is a very physical team and never gives up. We have to prepare very carefully. In the past, I have always said that the Italian team must qualify for the 2026 World Cup through the play-offs. We need to improve a lot. The whole team must look forward with confidence.”

Italian media say the federation is considering holding an early meeting at Coverciano ahead of the semi-final in March next year. However, the clubs' tight schedules make this plan unlikely to materialise.

Coach Gattuso affirmed that he was not involved in this matter: "We have the President and the people responsible for the plan. Of course, the more time we have together, the better."

The 48-year-old added that the time between the 11th round of Serie A and the team's return to training after the 30th round is too long, so it is important to maintain contact with the players: "I have to find a way to talk to them, look them in the eye, not only about technical matters but also about everything else. Hopefully everything goes in the right direction."

In response to the suggestion that Italy are struggling with different tactical systems, coach Gattuso responded: “The problem is not the tactics. Every system has its strengths and weaknesses. What worries me more is the fragility of the team.

When we play properly, we can compete. But mistakes like the last match cannot be repeated. My top priority is to improve my mental stability and competitive spirit, and the tactical issues will come later."

Commenting on the results of Italy's draw, Gazzetta dello Sport said that this was the easiest possible schedule for Gattuso's team. Meanwhile, legend Gianluigi Buffon was pleased that Italy avoided two formidable opponents, Sweden and Poland.

The European play-offs will take place on March 26 (semi-finals) and March 31 (final) next year.
